NETTUTS.com: Building a jQuery-Powered Tag-Cloud

Dan Wellerman has written up a tutorial for NETTUTS.com about making a jQuery and PHP-powered tag cloud out of the tagging already a part of your site.

Aside from the actual links themselves, which give people an idea of the subjects that your site covers, they can also show how popular the different subjects are. Another great thing about tag-clouds is that they can be used to describe the frequency of anything; you can link to articles, blog posts, images, video, or anything else that you have in abundance on your site.

The javascript makes an Ajax call back to a PHP script waiting in the background (that pulls the tags out of their example database). It puts them into a JSON format and pushes them back out to the script, though they should have gone with json_encode instead of their own partial soltuon.

The jQuery then parses the JSON message back out and drops it into CSS styled divs already in the page. As always, the source in available for download.

CES To Host Apple Vendors At ‘iLounge’

posted by jeffwend

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is increasingly appearing to be the place to be in 2010 for Apple vendors. The tradeshow announced the iLounge, an 18,000-square foot area for Apple gadget sellers. A gauge of the swiftness of the shift from Macworld to CES could be seen in that the Apple-centric venue at CES initially was to be just 4,000-square feet. “In fact, the original space allocated for the pavillion sold out in less that one week - a CES show record,” AFP quoted CEA vice president Karen Chupka. The focus on CES by the Apple community followed Cupertino’s decision in December to make Macworld 2009 the last year it appeared. Soon after, word leaked out that Apple was headed to the CES to compete head-to-head with Microsoft and other rivals.

Acer 10 Aspire One now with Linux

posted by republic

The Acer 10 Aspire One launched last week but it seems that one vital ingredient was missing – choice of operating system. Fortunately, Acer 10 Aspire One will now come with Linux as well as Windows XP. The move has been made in a response to user demand. Last week’s announcement made Linux conspicious by its absense, especially considering that Acer made such a deal out of it’s own interface with the launch of the Acer Aspire One 8.9-inch version.

When Acer launched its first successful netbook, the cunningly named Aspire One, it shipped with Linpus Linux with an interface especially designed for Acer. It meant that even those new to mobile computing could make the most of the 8.9-inch netbook as it came with everything you needed, including word processing and host of other applications.

It also came with its own novel email client that allowed you to manage all your separate email accounts from within one application. This works really well and it seems you’ll now be able to take up the option with when the new 10-inch model launches next month.

The Acer 10 Aspire One will have the same spec and be equipped with an Intel Atom N270 processor, 1024MB of memory and 160 GB internal hard drive regardless of whether you opt for the Windows XP or Linux version. Weighing 1.18kg, the Acer Aspire One comes with a 10.1-inch LED screen (1024 x 600 pixels) that comes with a built-in Acer webcam above the panel.

Connectivity includes Bluetooth, 802.11g Wi-Fi, as well as Ethernet for fixed connections. There is even Acer’s Signal Up technology for as strong a signal as possible. The Acer Aspire One has the option to be fitted with 3G or WiMAX but there are no details yet of any telcos choosing to take this option on.It will come in four high-gloss colour options including white, blue, red and black.

The Acer 10 Aspire One will cost £299 (inc. VAT) when it ships towards the end of February. In the meantime, if you want to check out the current Acer Aspire One offerings, click here.

Six Software Programs To Fix Your PC

One of the fun parts of owning a computer is, of course, access to the internet. The worldwide web is chock full of useful information, readily available at your fingertips! It is also home to potentially lethal viruses, many of which can wreak havoc on your system within moments. The following four programs can help you avoid trouble; best of all they are absolutely free. 1. Mozilla Firefox - Mozilla is a fantastic browser. If you're using Firefox you don't know what you're missing. It is absolutely the best browser available today. Did I mention it's free? What else do you need? 2. Spybot Search and Destroy - gets rid of adware, spyware, and malware. Blocks the installation of spyware before it occurs; works in conjunction with anti-virus software, not as a replacement for one. 3. AVG Antvirus - this software offers basic antivirus protection, nothing more nothing lest. This is not the best virus protection program out there, but it is good. If nothing else, if you're in a pinch and you think you have a virus it can help. Also, they can help you find viruses before they are allowed to install on your machine. 4. Zone Alarm - if you're on the Internet your computer needs a firewall. Newer versions of Windows do come with a firewall, but it is not what some would consider completely adequate. If you don't have a firewall installed, you should really try the software. Even if you do have a firewall, it might be good enough. 5. Notepad++ - the notepad that comes with your computer does read text files, but that's about all it does. After decades, Microsoft still hasn't improved their software. Then again, at least they haven't broke it right? If you are a programmer or even someone who just wants to get more out of your notepad text editor, Notepad++ is for you. 6. OpenOffice.org - working with Microsoft Office documents no longer meanst that you have to buy a copy of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel or Powerpoint. OpenOffice.org works with all of the popular Microsoft formats as well as the newly popular Open Document formats. Paying for software is fine that you don't always have to pay for software is plenty of great software available. It is completely free. This is just a very small list of software that will help improve your computer and won't cost you a penny. I hope this makes your life a bit easier.

Smashing Magazine: 10 Steps To Protect The Admin Area In WordPress

As all of the WordPress users out there know, the "admin" section of the installations is one of the most important areas of your site. That being said, it should also be one of the most well protected parts. This new article from Smashing Magazine has ten tips that you can use to help protect you and your blog from prying eyes.

The administration area of a Web application is a favorite target of hackers and thus particularly well protected. The same goes for WordPress: when creating a blog, the system creates an administrative user with a perfectly secure password and blocks public access to the settings area with a log-in page. This is the cornerstone of its protection. Let's dig deeper!

Here's their ten tips:

  • Rename and Upload the wordpress Folder
  • Extend the file wp-config.php
  • Move the wp-config.php file
  • Protect the wp-config.php file
  • Delete the admin User Account
  • Choose strong passwords
  • Protect the wp-admin Directory
  • Suppress Error Feedback on the Log-In Page
  • Restrict Erroneous Log-In Attempts
  • Keep Software Up to Date

PHP-GTK Community Site: World map of PHP-GTK developers

The PHP-GTK Community site has launched a new service to help PHP-GTKers out there find out other developers that might be in their area - a world map (based on Google maps) of other PHP-GTK developers around the world.

I reviewed the coordinates given by existing members and noticed a good number had visibly inverted latitude and longitude; so I inverted them again to place them where it appeared to make more sense (are there really PHP-GTK devs in the middle of the pacific, or near the South pole ?). So you may want to double-check your coordinates to make sure the values are correct, because it's likely I've not found every error.

He's also asking for the Brasil PHP-GTK community to include their information in the map as well as a request for anyone out there that might want to make a "prettier" icon for showing the developers on the map.

samsungram Samsung Develops World’s Highest Density DRAM

Samsung, already pleased with itself for introducing DDR, DDR2 and DDR3 RAM, said it has created the first-ever 4-gigabit (1 GB) SDRAM chip. Throw eight of these on a laptop memory stick and you’ve got twice the RAM that is currently available. It’s also more efficient than regular DDR3 memory thanks to a 50 nanometer manufacturing process, with an estimated 20 percent power savings of 2-gigabit sticks.  Transfer speeds reach 1.6 gigabits per second. Samsung doesn’t say when these chips will be commercially available, but the International Data Corporation  estimates that “over 2 gB” DDR3 RAM will comprise 3 percent of the market this year and more than half the market by 2012. posted by shawnpaul

Dell LTO4 tape format features the encryption (device level) technology which helps it to in protection of the data stored incase if the machine is misplaced, stolen or lost in a remote location. Dell LTO-4 backup media technology gives increased hardware protection with physical capacity of 800GB per cartridge (native) and 120Mb/s of native speed. All these powerful features help to alleviate overhead of administration and the backup windows are also shortened up in comparison to the LTO3 tape devices. The advance and effective features of Power-Vault Dell LTO4 tape libraries and drives make them ideal for data rich backup storage applications that require superior performance and high level of protection.  Dell LTO-4-120 tape drive having double data density and has the powerful features of its predecessor.

LTO-4-120 Dell Power Vault tape drive is version of the LTO-3 110T tape drive having double data density and has the powerful features of its predecessor. In addition to all these unique features, the LTO-4 Dell tape drive also has an internal buffer (256MB) that reduces the rewind & fill times of LTO data cartridge and also enhances data access speed. Scalability of the secure data storage enterprise solutions is enhanced through Dell LTO-4 Power Vault tape libraries that have automated mechanism that are designed specifically for lowering the administrative overhead and streamlining daily work operations.

Dell Power-Vault ML-6000, TL-4000 and TL-2000 tape libraries support encryption at drive level and offer native recording capacities of 321TB, 38.4TB, and 19.2TB respectively. These Dell LTO4 tape devices have features of data protection that are built in the devices. These features include on site copies of data backup in order to prevent data loss and the WORM feature creates data records that cannot be neither be altered nor changed. All the key technologies include native 4GB per second fiber channel connectivity, barcode inventorying, SAS interfaces (3GBps) and user friendly interface that result in automated and simplified backup storage operations. Dell TL-2000 tape library provides powerful and cost effective backup operations. Power-Vault TL-4000 is an extendable version designed for mid-range growing organizations. Dell ML-6000 tape library provides superior scalability and provides the facility of on demand non-disruptive extension with modules that enables easy and simple customization. During the speeding resolutions, the failures are isolated and forecasted by the intuitive wizards and intelligent diagnostics.

Dell LTO-4 has mechanisms of “digital speed match” and accelerated cycle times of unload and load for synchronizing with the server’s data transfer speed. These features facilitate in optimizing data throughput, data resource productivity and data tape longevity. Data is considered as one of the most important and valuable asset of the company. Archived data occupies most of the storage environment’s overall capacity therefore, it is important that cost effective, efficient, reliable, secure data retrieval and data backup systems must be implemented. Data storage companies must secure and protect the data irrespective of its location and during transit so that they can comply with the rigorous service level agreements (SLA) and legislative mandates. Records that are unrecoverable or lost no matter if it is measured in expense, public image or time are very costly for the organizations. Selecting the most ideal and suitable medium for data preservation and validation of document authenticity is very critical.
