CUSTOMER REVIEW -

I bought this as a second TV to be used only for gaming. Previously tried several LCD TVs and, IMHO, LCDs the way they are now are simply unacceptable for gaming - too much motion blur. So far tried it with my PS3 and Xbox 360 - Street Fighter 4 is a joy to play on this TV. Also, I have my PS2 hooked up to it as well and the TV does an excellent job at processing and displaying the (crappy) 480i output of the PS2. I tried several LCD TVs with my PS2 and the results were uniformly awful with huge ugly interlacing artifacts. This TV has them a little, but you really have to look very close to see them and picky as I am, I do not notice them when playing a game. Overall if you are looking for a gaming TV/monitor, this is the set to get...well, any Panasonic plasma, really.

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

My TV arrived last week and I bought it from Amazon. First, buying from Amazon is the way to go if you can't find the same price at your local Best Buy or electronics store. Shipping is guaranteed, and it came just 3 business days after I purchased from the distributor. I also got my HD service connected the day it came, so I got to try out the HD immediately. I had been looking at TV's for over a month, daily, spending hours a week researching LCD v Plasma, different brand names, product lines, and prices. First, figure out LCD v Plasma. Lighting, primary uses, and preference ultimatley determine what you want. Plasma was an easy choice for me as Sports & movies (with my blue ray player) are the primary purposes of my TV and my room is in the basement with no outside sunlight coming in, so glare isn't an issue with my plasma. This TV is solid. I bought $10, HDMI (1.3 category 2) cables and they produce an excellent picture. Standard protocol for plasmas is to "break them in" to prevent burn-in, which I am doing. They recommend keeping the picture settings on "standard" regular mode for the first 80-100 hours. I have tried turning it up to complete brightness and it looks amazing, but I will continue to break it in on the standard settings for 2-3 weeks. Don't worry about "burn-in" as many store experts I talked said this is a non-issue with plasmas nowadays and Panasonic says these tv's are good for 80-100k hours of viewing which is like 30 years running all the time. I watched Iron-Man, on my blue ray PS3 player with HDMI Cables, and the picture was indeed stunning. So worth it. I bought this TV for $900 including shipping and if you get it for that or cheaper it is a steal. The TV has a great sleak design, super easy to assemble the stand base, and is nice and light (like 70 lbs). I don't think you'll go wrong with LCD at all from what I saw of them, but for the movie buff who loves to dim the lights and watch a stunning picture, or the NFL fan who loves a great picture in HD of a good game, this is the TV you want. For the price, you won't find a better quality branded TV than this one. The HD picture I get from my satellite provider is great, and once I can turn up the picture to maximum capabilities I think the TV will be unreal. I've heard cables can have a huge difference, but from what I've read and tested personally, the HDMI cable 1.3 category 2 is just fine and processes the 1080p signal for blue ray and HDTV perfectly. If you buy this TV you will be happy, mark my words.

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

With the location of this TV being mounted into a recessed area I really needed the ability to extend the TV away from the mounting location in order to access behind it. Not only does this this wall mount have the articulating feature, it is much nicer than another I have in a different location and it was much cheaper. The included HDMI cable was a nice bonus.

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

Very sturdy, easy to mount and attach TV. Holds my 46" flat screen Sony nicely. Have a second one for my 2nd 46" flat screen as well. Very Happy with both.

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

I mounted a 42 inch LG with side speakers so the TV width is 47.5 inches. This product was sturdy and took two people to mount the rack and lift the TV in place. They give you so many screws to attach the mounting brackets to the TV it probably fits most TV's. Make sure your studs are 16 inches apart before ordering. This mount will not work with 24 inch studs

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

I have absolutely no complaints about this product. It has performed exactly like advertised. I am very pleased.

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

A lot of people have made a comment that the only drawback of this item is its heavy. Yes it is, I was a weightlifter for many years and I had trouble holding this thing on the wall at shoulder level. All in all though, this is a solid and well assembled wall mount; greatly worth the price.

My husband and I absolutely loved this TV...I bought it for him as a Christmas present in 2008. I did tons of research...took me over 3 months, yes I am very picky and frugal, and I finally decided on this set and bought it on line thru Amazon.com. Had an absolutely great experience, until exactly 9 days out of "official" warranty. Purchased it on 14 Dec 08, delivered 22 Dec 08 and set it up on Christmas Day. Well, on 23 Dec 09, we were watching a DVD, had it on pause when suddenly we heard a pop, saw a thick black line appear across the screen. We turned it off immediately...To make a real long story short, the bottom line is since it is out of the warranty, which is considered one year from the purchase date, there is nothing they will do about it, even though part of the warranty offers 2 years on the glass. The Concierge repair folks said the set was not repairable. So now, we have a $1500 piece of trash sitting in our living area in the hope that someone from Panasonic will stand behind their product and replace it.....So far, no such luck...I am not finished trying to go up higher on the authority chain, so if anyone has any suggestions or a point of contact, I would certainly appreciate that....But if anyone is considering this TV or any other Panasonic, please protect yourself with an extended warranty or purchase something else all together....

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

I have owned this TV for about 1-1/2 years now and couldn't be happier with the flawless picture quality and sound. I do use a 5:1 speaker system to amplify the volume for enhanced effect. Usually after owning something this long I get bored and stop caring about it much. But this TV has been an exception to that rule. It goes to show that there are truly some things in life which can be a joy forever.

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

I read a lot of reviews and did a lot of research. When Plasma came up on top in quality and over LCD and lower in price, I was very surprised. Plasma still has a bad name from when they first came out, but trust me, those problems are gone. I got this TV for $900 in NOV of 09 on sale at Best Buy, a deal I have not seen replicated. The picture on this TV is outstanding. Yes, Plasma is not as bright as LCD but I would rather have a TV with better picture and invest in some blinds for my windows :) The lack of motion blur is amazing. LCD is getting better with their motion blur but Plasma is by far superior. Some of the motion blur reduction on the LCD's makes the picture look 'live' or like a documentary to me and it drives me crazy. But without the motion blur reduction on LCD is it just annoying. The moral of the story is the clarity, the color, the contrast (the contrast is insane!) and the overall viewing experience is fantastic on plasma! Everything I read said Panasonic is the king of plasma and I have not been disappointed. If you're worried about burn in just don't walk away from your TV on pause for and hour. And if you do pause it, just turn off the screen! The only other suggestion I have is to get a decent power strip. Don't spend a hundred dollars, but everyone told me that the life of the TV will easily be 15 years if you get a good power strip. It regulates the flux in your electricity and protects your TV. You will not be disappointed with this TV!

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

The TV was great, worth every penny. Then after 14months it started doing the "10 Blinks Of Death". Contacted Panasonic and they said, sorry it needs fixed and your past the 12month warranty. I told them I was disatisfied by what appears to be an obvious manufacturing flaw given the number of people online with the same problem. He stated "There have been no reports of any cause based on the manufacturing of the product. There could be external causes for any failure to the product." I guess from now on, I will buy something other then Panasonic. I understand electronics can fail, I just wish I would have been treated better. From what I have read online, it looks like having the "Extended" warranty wouldnt help much either as some people have been without a TV for over 6 months.

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

I purchased this TV in November of 2008. In December of 2009 (yep, 1 month after warranty expired) I got the blinking red lights of death. Doesn't turn on at all. I will say that while it worked I couldn't have been happier with my purchase! Called Panasonic, "Sorry, nothing we can do outside the warranty period. Here is the number of a repair shop." I got in contact with a manager, and after stringing me along for TWO MONTHS, they finally told me tough luck, nothing they can do. This issue is all over the internet (google it) and after talking to a repair shop it would be over $600 to get 3 circuit boards and the power supply replaced. My only hope is that the TV now works great to tempt thieves to break-into my house and waste their time stealing junk. I hope someone steals it because at least my homeowners insurance wouldn't stick it to me like Panasonic has. This issue is not limited to this model nor only to their plasma screens...stay away from Panasonic TV's!

ON SALE, only buy Used from

Panasonic's Lumix Digital Camera automatically starts with an edge. A LEICA DC VARIO-ELMARIT Lens delivers superior optics and an astouning 28mm (equivalent) focal length for a wider visual angle than most other digital-camera models offer. The DMC-LX1 features a 4x optical zoom with a 28 to 112mm capability (35mm equivalent). This and a 1/1.65" diagonal CCD with 8.4 million effective pixels give you superb image quality over a wide shooting range. The Extended Optical Zoom, which minimizes the image degradation that normally occurs with digital zooming, gives you up to 5x zooming power. Normal hand jitter is a common cause for blurred results. The DMC-LX1 has a built-in gyrosensor that detects any hand movement and relays a signal to a tiny microcomputer inside the camera, which instantly calculates the compensation needed. A linear motor then shifts the Optical Image Stabilizer lens as necessary to guide incoming light from the image straight to the CCD. You won't even notice it working--all you'll see are the outstanding results. Multiple aspect ratios result in different still picture resolutions - 4 - 3 Aspect Ratio (Still Image) up to 2880 x 2160; 3 - 2 Aspect Ratio (Still Image) up to 3248 x 2160; 16 - 9 Aspect Ratio (Still Image) up to 3840 x 2160 Video movie capture up to 640x480 2.5 Bright TFT LCD screen with easy to follow menu operation 2 Self-timer modes PictBridge mode allows printing images without a computer Audio with movie and still capture modes (up to 5 seconds per still picture) Uses SD Memory Storage (32MB included) (J&R suggest purchasing an optional SD memory card of 256MB or higher for practical use) Includes Rechargeable Battery - Up to 240 pictures per charge (CIPA Standard) and AC Charger, Data Transfer Software, USB and AV Cables, Lens Cap, Strap Unit Dimensions (H x W x D) 2.20'' x 4.16'' x 1.01'' / Weighs about 8 ounces

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

Great little camera. By now though (2009) the LX3 is available and is very much better (if a bit bigger). If, however, you just want a 16:9 wide angle and don't shoot in low light much and can get a great price (you should by now) it's worth a shot. I gave it four stars subjectively based on what it meant to me. My real opinion, however, is to pool your money and get the LX3 (get a silver at great price. It's pictures are no different and you aren't Henri Bresson). But again, value for the money means getting an LX1 at a really good price and enjoying it versus saving up for the LX3 and waiting a bit longer, which is what I recommend.

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

Not to sound redundant from the other reviews, I'll highlight my pros and cons: Pros: -TRUE 16:9 videos (848x480 pixel MOVs, not the cropped kind. Product description was wrong stating that it can capture only up to 640x480). -Lengthy 20min video captures if you have a 2GB SD card. -16:9 photos -28mm wideangle focal length -LEICA lens -Excellent outdoor photos Cons: -Indoor video/photo is grainy -Video captures have less than stellar audio. -Cap Lens cover Overall: Despite is downfalls, its uniqueness compensate for it and sets it apart from many cameras.

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

I've worked for many years in the photo/video business as a camera operator for some of the top news shows on television and can honestly say this camera is current technology at its best. It is small, solid and able to take stunning photographs and save as data - raw - for the best in image preservation. Having raw data is to digital what having the original negative is to film. After using this camera for about a year now I can't report one negative... it is the best point and shoot camera. It does have small chips and all the attentive drawbacks like low dynamic range, noise at higher iso, blooming highlights, etc.. All digital still cameras under $2000 use small chips. Use your photography skills to work around the limits and you'll be rewarded with technically outstanding photos... I know a National Geo photog who regularly uses one on assignment. Another friend shot Katrina with one for AP. It is a very sturdy camera, highly portable, well designed with intuitive controls, and capable to taking fine art quality photos. The wide end of the excellent leica lens is comparable to 28mm in the 35mm format and very clean. In the end analysis, it is a very well engineered piece. In fact, Leica is selling basically the very same camera, but with a titanium body, as the D-lux2... the electronics and glass are the same.... for quite a few more $$$. One of my all time favorite cameras (and I regularly shoot with cameras that approach six figures - Pro HD video and have worked with stills from hasselblad, nikon, mamiya, contax, leica... )

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

I love this camera as an alternative to my Nikon D200 whenever weight or space is an issue. It is one of the few pocket-size cameras on the market that can give you the option to shoot in RAW and offers extensive manual control. The Leica lens is superb and so is the picture quality. Manual control is available for most features I would like to have control over. The controls are easily accessible and intuitive despite the small size of the camera. The 16:9 picture format is great for landscape shots. I use this format most of the time. Image stabilization works very well. Noise is not really an issue if one shots in manual mode with a low ISO. The price is a bit heavy. However, I could not find a comparable camera (RAW format, manual controls, small size etc) at a more competitive price. I wholeheartedly recommend this camera to any photographer who is looking for a pocket-size camera with extensive manual control and the possibility to shoot in RAW.

CUSTOMER REVIEW -

I have had just about every digital camera you can mention - but this is the first review I've written. I really wanted to like (actually love) this camera - could not wait to get it! Wow - I.S., 8MP, Leica lens - what else could you want! Well - I also bought a Canon SD700 a few weeks ago too (both cameras still within return dates) so I put them to the test. Bottom line - the Canon won hands down! By the way, I also have a Sony P200 - the Canon is still much better. Back to the Panasonic review - pictures were OK - actually not bad, nothing really special - the 16:9 is nice but the pictures appear smaller so you need to zoom in a bit. However the Canon was just as good even at only 6 MP! I use the video option a lot and don't even bother with my old Video Camera anymore. Over the last two week I went to two weddings and produced very nice little videos for the couples only using the Canon SD700 (no shakes to make people sea sick). Clear and sharp video with that little SD700 (you can even zoom in although it gets pixilated a bit). Unfortunately, the Panasonic is pretty very bad at video, no zooming, blurry, and jumpy - and you also must use .mov format to view vs. the more common .avi for the Canon. On the outside - the Panasonic is larger than the Canon and the lens sticks out and use an old fashioned lens cap - now that would be acceptable if the other functions of the camera we good. All in all - I've returned the Panasonic and will keep the Canon - just one man's (I mean person's) opinion!

I've had this computer for four or five months and I overall love it. It's fast, has a decent sized hard drive, and is really durable. My main complaints are with Vista. The Windows toolbar frequently freezes and the volume function can become unusable when this happens. Music often skips, mostly when you're using WMP. Another issue, and I'm not sure if this is a Vista or WMP error, is the video will often play much slower than the audio. Non-vista related complaints are that this computer defin......

I've had this for about a month and am very pleased. It is quick even with a lot of programs running and the keyboard is as easy to use as a full-size one (though a number pad would be nice). It seems pretty sturdy but is still toward the light end of the notebook spectrum. Battery lasts around 2 1/2 hours and charges fast. Only negative so far is that the touchpad is pretty sensitive, so you sometimes jump around accidentally. For music or movies, get external speakers. If you're the kind who h......

The laptop it self works great but the LCD screen is very fragile and breaks very easily. Toshiba will not cover it under warranty and has no warnings on the product or in the directions. Mine broke by simply turning it on a table.

this computer is the worst, horrible keyboard, slow performance, and the horror of VISTA , which renders everything useless, the mousepad is the worst I have ever used, I look forward to smashing it to pieces someday

Toshiba is known for computers that fail and the worst possible customer service. They have settled at least one class action lawsuit in the billions. We bought a Toshiba not knowing about their horrible record and it overheated. They have had it back to be serviced three times (and it was only six months old) but it still won't work. In fact when we got it back this time it won't even boot up.

Do research on the net before buying a Toshiba!

"Almost perfect. The price WAS amazing!" 2009-06-10
By Kevin R. Araki (Juneau, AK USA)
First, I want to forewarn you, the HP spec line says 802.11a/g/n. I don't feel that the 2133 comes with 802.11 N as an option.
Secondly, this is a confusing review. Do I like the HP2133 or not? Let's talk about the price that I purchased it for: $299.99 (+$27.69 S&H; I live in Alaska. Your S&H may be less) from TigerDirect. Why does the title say, "WAS amazing?" The day after I purchased this, TigerDirect took that sale price off their website and the Amazon market. I don't think you can get a NEW one from TigerDirect at ANY price. There is a refurb. for $279... If you trust refurbs it is still a GREAT deal.
Now here's what I got for $300 (there are about 5 different versions of the HP Mini 2133):
VIA C7-M, 1.2 GHz processor
1GB RAM
120GB HD
Windows XP Home (SP2)
60 Day trial of MS Office 2007 *Professional*
HP extra software (not all bloatware)
1.3M Pixel webcam
3 Cell battery (about 2 hours on a charge)
8.9" (22.7 cm) 1280 x 768 screen
All the rest that you expect on a 2133.

Here's what I like about the HP 2133: The keyboard may be the best, compared to any netbook I have placed my hands on, and I've played with an Acer Aspire One, Asus eee, MSI Wind, and a Dell Mini Note 9. The speakers are very good for a netbook; the webcam seems bright and of very good quality; the weight of 2.8 lbs. (1.3 kg) is just about perfect, even with the optional 6 cell battery; of course the netbook's size is what draws you to the netbook in the first place; the screen resolution at 1280 x 768 is beautiful; and did I mention the keyboard is great?

Okay, why did I rate this four stars (not five stars)? Don't I think that $300 for this netbook is a good price? No, it is not a good price, it is an AMAZING price... but you can't get it for this price anymore, unless you want a refurb. But that's not why I rated it four stars. The HP 2133 is almost perfect, except for three things: processor, battery life, and screen size.

Processor: The VIA C7-M, 1.2 GHz is decent, but I can tell that my daughter's Intel Atom 270 is just a tad bit snappier on some things. The VIA does fine with YouTube pages and a couple of test DVD's, but I've upgraded to 2GB of RAM and I think that has helped. It balks a bit with an external DVD, but it is not unusable. My guess is that you would not want to watch Blu-Ray disks on this, but since I don't have an external Blu-Ray player, I can't tell you for sure.

Battery life: 2 hours on the 3 cell battery is okay, but I felt I needed to purchase a 6 cell battery Super-Capacity Li-ion Battery For HP 2133 Mini-Note series replace KE948UT KX868AT KR922UT HSTNN-DB63 KX869AT KR939UT KR922UT series Ac Laptop Notebook Main Battery [ 4800mAh 6 Cells] for my occasional multi-stop trips to other parts of Alaska, or California. I think, though I haven't tested it, that I'll get about 4 hours on the 6 cell battery, for a combined 6 hours with the two batteries. But even at that, the battery life seems puny compared to the ASUS 1000HE at 9.5 hours on a single charge or even most new netbooks that last about 6 hours on one battery charge.

Screen size: Now don't get me wrong: I purchased the 2133 BECAUSE of the screen *resolution.* 1280 x 768 is about the highest resolution available in a netbook (most are 1024 x 600 these days), but why didn't HP put 10.1" (25.5 cm) screen on the lid? There definitely is enough space to put a 10 inch screen on the 2133; just shrink the speaker area a little bit. Compared to my daughter's 10.1" MSI Wind the icons are really small.

Actually, I can't figure out why any of the netbook makers are not making a 10 inch WXGA (1280x768 resolution) screens. The Gigabyte M912 (8.9" as well), Inventec SX3 (8.9" screen), Samsung NC20 (12" screen), and Dell Mini 12 (duh, 12" screen) all have WXGA resolution (in some cases 1280 x 800). But none have a 10" screen. Do I sound like Goldilocks testing the three bears netbooks? The 12" screen is too large (for a netbook), the 8.9" screen is too small (the icons are dinky), but the 10" screen is just right. According to some accounts, the HP 2140 is supposed to have 1366 x 768 resolution on a 10.1" screen model, but as I write this, I know of no one who has seen or reviewed this mystic beast. To make matters worse, the available resolution on the HP 2140 is 1024 x 576 (less than the standard 1024 x 600). Perhaps I should have waited, and purchased the HP 2140 with a higher resolution, but here's the bottom line: for $300 the HP 2133 is a steal! I am quite happy with what I have!

Defrosting the Digital Library: Bibliographic Tools for the Next Generation Web

PLoS Comput Biol, Vol. 4, No. 10. (31 October 2008), e1000204.

Many scientists now manage the bulk of their bibliographic information electronically, thereby organizing their publications and citation material from digital libraries. However, a library has been described as "thought in cold storage," and unfortunately many digital libraries can be cold, impersonal, isolated, and inaccessible places. In this Review, we discuss the current chilly state of digital libraries for the computational biologist, including PubMed, IEEE Xplore, the ACM digital library, ISI Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Citeseer, arXiv, DBLP, and Google Scholar. We illustrate the current process of using these libraries with a typical workflow, and highlight problems with managing data and metadata using URIs. We then examine a range of new applications such as Zotero, Mendeley, Mekentosj Papers, MyNCBI, CiteULike, Connotea, and HubMed that exploit the Web to make these digital libraries more personal, sociable, integrated, and accessible places. We conclude with how these applications may begin to help achieve a digital defrost, and discuss some of the issues that will help or hinder this in terms of making libraries on the Web warmer places in the future, becoming resources that are considerably more useful to both humans and machines.
