Gateway computer to Stop Selling Computers Through Internet
Gateway computer on Friday said it would stop selling Computers through its Internet, instead focusing on selling Computers through third-party stores and other online retailers.
Gateway computer has been selling Computers through partner retail stores since 2004, but it is now cutting direct online sales to consumers in order to cut costs and align its business model with parent company Acer, the company?From:http://www.office-products-suppliers.com/Companies/ ?said. Acer last year acquired Gateway computer for US0 million in an effort to boost its consumer presence in North America.
The change has resulted in some staff cuts, said Lisa Emard, a Gateway computer spokeswoman. "These reductions have been happening in small waves as the company has methodically evaluated each department and function," she said.
The transition away from direct sales is happening over the uComputeroming weekend, Emard said. Consumers will be able to purchase products off Gateway computer's Internet until Saturday evening.
The change could help Gateway computer better compete with rivals Hewlett-Packard and Dell, said David Daoud, research manager at IDC.(from: http://www.office-products-suppliers.com/buy-IDC/) Also, since the indirect model has worked well for Acer, it may be hoping that focusing on the same model can help boost Gateway computer sales.
Daoud suggested that the decision to kill off Gateway computer's online sales could mean that Acer may replace some Gateway computer brands with its own.
Some of Gateway computer's brands, like eMachines, which has a strong consumer presence, may conflict with Acer's offerings, Daoud said. By getting rid of Gateway computer's online sales and potentially in the future some of the Gateway computer brands, Acer may be simply trying to consolidate the brands, which could increase Acer brand awareness, Daoud said.
However, Emard said that Acer is focusing different brands on different sectors, and all of Gateway computer's brands will continue to be offered.
Acer offers four brands worldwide -- Acer, eMachines, Gateway computer and Packard-Bell -- with Gateway computer products currently available through retailers in Japan, China, Mexico, Canada and the U.S., Emard said.
"While there is indeed some crossover today, you're going to see Acer moving upstream with its product line and offering more high-performance products (from: http://www.office-products-suppliers.com/Products/)featuring advanced technology," Emard said.
Since the acquisition, Gateway computer has helped Acer boost its U.S. presence, where it was running neck and neck with Apple as the third-largest Computer retailer. The combined company sold 1.3 million units, a 7.8 percent market share and a 49.9 percent increase over last year's third quarter.

My new laptop is a Gateway, and it works just fine. Intel pentium dual core, dvd-ready and it has a dvd-labeler on it too. I’ve also handled an HP before, as my father’s laptop is an HP and that works great too. HP laptops have great connectivity (his laptop has a built-in bluetooth device that I’m green with envy about). Both are good in my opinion.
What you should be more concerned about is its warranty. The better the warranty deal, the better. What’s good about HP and Gateway is they both offer service warranties that span from 1-2 years. My dad’s previous HP crashed on him after a year and a half. He took it to HP, and since it’s warranty-covered, they replaced the whole thing.
Also, what’s in the laptops? Built-in bluetooth? Wireless connectivity? How many usb cables can you put into it without having to buy a hub?Does it come with a virus scanner already? This all depends on what your lifestyle requires.
I’m not sure if Gateway would do the same for me in regards to replacing the whole thing if it crashes, I sure hope they do, but point of it is, it all depends on the service and what additional stuff it has. Specs like speed and connectivity are all the same. They’re both intel. They’re both windows. They could both be dual core and have the same speed, so on and so forth. Good luck and have fun with your new computer!
Gateway is still around. Now-a-days there is not much difference between computers.
I personally like HP but any body’s support has to be better than HP’s.
I’ve had Gateway Monitors and had satisfactory service on them.
If Gateway’s support is in the US I’d go with them cause HP’s is overseas and understanding their English is almost impossible for me.
Gateway was recently acquired by Acer. Gateway will continue to do well in the low-end of the market even though they will be assimilated by Acer as time goes on. Stick with the HP.

All in all – don’t buy the LX6810 – it is a lemon (check all the complaints on the web) – build your own instead – it is cheaper and better.
After doing all that it fried anyway. So now I am putting in a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R motherboard with a Q9450 processor and 10GB or RAM. I am also replacing the powersupply as the one that comes with the LX6810 is only 400w, which will not run high-end video cards. After I get that all put in then I an adding 2 Nvidia GeForce 9800GT video cards and an M-Audio Delta 1010LT sound capture card. I will need to “re-design” the back plane to add the extra slots and put in a pair of new USB 3.0 cards.
@lenf2 – note of interest to those looking to install new fans – there are NO plugs for fan motors, only the main fan plug, so you will need some solder and electrical tape to cut into an existing power cable to wire in the fans, Alos the wires you need for a 12v fan are the YELLOW and Black. –
The LX6810 is a peice of total junk! I bought one of these a little over a year ago and it just burned out the motherboard and processor! (of course this was just AFTER the warranty expired) I had been having problems with it over heating and shutting down until I went into the bios and set the cooler fan on the processor to run continously and installed 2 case fans. I noticed the case had spots for the fans, but Gateway was too cheap to install them.
If you buy this computer, I’d STRONGLY recommend adding a couple of decent case fans and swapping out the video card for a card with an external exhaust design. You shouldn’t have overheating issues if you do that. Mine stays very cool with those modifications.
I don’t know why more pc’s don’t come with a case fan, the one I have now is a cheapie pc but it has a fan in the back.
