Key Features

The Longest-Lasting Macbook Battery Ever--Up to 7 Hours

da7e6 Apple Mac Laptops apple macbook 102009 batterylife 200 Apple Mac Laptops: Apple MacBook MC207LL/A 13.3 Inch Laptop
Now take MacBook with you everywhere without worrying about plugging in or even carrying your power adapter. Its built-in lithium-polymer battery lasts up to 7 hours on a single charge, which makes it perfect for long flights, all-day workshops, and marathon study sessions. Thanks to its advanced battery chemistry and charging technology, the MacBook battery can be recharged up to 1000 times--good for about five years of typical usage--and lasts nearly three times the lifespan of typical notebook batteries.

A Comfortable Keyboard Your Fingers Will Love
The MacBook's keyboard is full size, with keys that are curved to contain your fingers and highly responsive to your touch. Its low-profile design integrates perfectly into the unibody enclosure, so you'll get a comfortable experience whether you're typing a quick email or writing a lengthy research report. The keyboard also gives you one-touch access to music and video controls and Mac OS X features such as Dashboard and Exposé.

Spacious Glass Multi-Touch Trackpad
The new MacBook Multi-Touch trackpad has no button because it is the button. Not having a separate button also makes for a larger trackpad surface, giving your fingers more room to move, click, and gesture. And because the trackpad supports Multi-Touch gestures, you can use one or more fingers to interact with your documents, images, and applications with gestures such as two-finger scroll, pinch, swipe, and rotate. If you come from a right-click world, you can configure a right-click area on the trackpad or simply press with two fingers.

Wireless That Works
Connect to the Internet at fast speeds anywhere thanks to the built-in AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi. Like everything else about a Mac, joining Wi-Fi networks couldn't be simpler. If you've previously connected to a network, your Mac automatically logs you in so you can immediately email, surf the web, or video chat. Have a Bluetooth-enabled phone, headset, keyboard, or mouse? They can all connect to your MacBook courtesy of built-in Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR--and it remembers all your devices, too

Innovative Power Cord
The MagSafe Power Adapter has a magnetic connection instead of a physical one. So if someone happens to trip over the power cord while you're working, they won't send your new MacBook flying off a table or desk. Instead, the cord breaks cleanly away, without damage to either the cord or the system. As a bonus, you can tell if your MacBook is fully charged when the LED on the connector changes from amber to green.

Easy Access To Connections And Ports
The connections and ports on MacBook--MagSafe power, Gigabit Ethernet, Mini DisplayPort, USB, and audio in/out--are all smartly integrated on the same side of the notebook. So your cables stay neatly organized, and connecting and disconnecting your devices is easy and convenient.

Environmentally Friendly Design

da7e6 Apple Mac Laptops apple macbook 102009 enviro 250 Apple Mac Laptops: Apple MacBook MC207LL/A 13.3 Inch Laptop
Because Apple designs both hardware and software, we can reduce our environmental footprint in ways others can't. For starters, a highly efficient power supply reduces the amount of power wasted when bringing electricity from the wall to your Mac. Unlike a lot of PCs, a Mac uses energy-efficient hardware components that work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve power--even between keystrokes.

A Mac also doesn't contain a lot of toxic materials. All Mac displays are mercury and arsenic free, and the internal components are free of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs).

Advanced Power Management
Unlike a lot of Windows-based PC systems, MacBook uses energy-efficient hardware components that work hand in hand with the operating system to conserve power. Mac OS X spins down hard drives and activates sleep mode on already energy-efficient LED-backlit displays. And it balances tasks across both central processors and graphics processors. Mac OS X never misses a power-saving opportunity, no matter how small. It even regulates the processor between keystrokes, reducing power between the letters you type. That's just one of many ways Apple manages small amounts of power that add up to big savings.

Longer-lasting Battery--Lasts up to 5 Years
The removable batteries in most notebooks are designed to be replaced every year or two, which means lots of batteries are used up and discarded. But the battery in the new MacBook lasts up to five years--or 1000 recharges. So it uses just one battery in the same time a typical notebook uses three, reducing waste and environmental impact. And to help ensure that batteries are disposed of in an environmentally responsible way, Apple offers a battery take-back program in 95 percent of the countries in which it does business.

ENERGY STAR Qualification
The MacBook meets the stringent low power requirements set by the EPA, making it ENERGY STAR qualified. ENERGY STAR 5.0 sets significantly higher efficiency limits for power supplies and aggressive limits for the computer's typical annual power consumption.

I made this video to hopefully add a little more life to the product.

Snow Leopard adds a lot more than I thought.

This is a great computer if you want to play with pics, surf the web, mess with your music collection.
This is not the Mac if you want serious processing power of lots of inputs to create a home network.
Look to a MacBook Pro or iMac for that.

I would have given it 5 stars if it had more inputs.
This is a pricy computer already, now I have to spend more to get adaptors.
I wish it was still available in black or you could opt for the non-glaze display.

I hope you enjoy the video, I had fun making it.

This review is from: Apple MacBook MC207LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop (Personal Computers)

I had intended to purchase my mother a Macbook for some time now. I wobbled between the several models I considered. However, Apple’s late October 2009 update to the white polycarbonate MacBook made the decision much easier.

Reasons for my Decision – With this update to the 13-inch white MacBook, Apple gave its entry-notebook impressive numbers. The processor a 2.26 GHZ Core 2 Duo is the same processor found in the 13-inch MacBook Pro. 2GB of memory? Same as the Pro. Nvidia 9400 Graphics, Same as the Pro. Hard drive? 250 GB, bigger than the MacBook Pro (it has 160GB only).

Yes, considering the larger hard drive, 250 versus 160, this white MacBook actually gives you a higher specification computer in some regards than the $200 more expensive MacBook Pro 13-inch. Remember this updated white MacBook also now incorporates the unibody under its polycarbonate shell. The unibody provides strength, and I must say this notebook is very solid. Furthermore, Apple has incorporated a long-life battery! The only downside is Apple must replace it, though it has a longer life cycle. In terms of performance, my mother reported to me simple usage of nearly six hours on a charge. Impressive. Blows away my older Mac notebook’s battery.

Yes, this white MacBook does lack the remote control sensor, Firewire Port, and backlit keyboard that the MacBook Pro would offer, but my mother would likely not use those features and she had an affinity towards the white polycarbonate. The white does look nice, but handle and place it on surfaces very carefully as it will show light scratches easily.

The bottom of the MacBook is a bit strange. It is a rubber seal so to speak like what is found on the bottom of Airport Extreme and Apple TV. I’m not certain I like that choice by Apple. The material does pick up dirt easily. I would recommend wiping off whatever surface you are going to sit the computer on, to remove light dust, if you worry about the computer’s appearance.

Overall, I was looking to find a quality Mac, for my mother. I didn’t want to compromise performance, and I feel I didn’t despite choosing this entry-level MacBook. Truly, with its stats, it can hardly be called entry level. My daily Mac is only slightly faster. These computers are getting faster and faster, and they impress me. Snow Leopard is great, and my mother is enjoying iPhoto and iMovie, all included with the computer.

The price to value of this MacBook is remarkable. At two hundred less than the MacBook Pro you get the same speed and memory, plus a larger hard drive. You can’t argue with that. I didn’t, and the MacBook has impressed.

Since Windows 95 I have been a PC user, I have been through 95, 98, 98se, millennium, xp and vista and I have had enough. I’ve been through 3 PC laptops in 4 years and only one of those didn’t have fatal hardware failures or viruses. I used Mac’s briefly in 99′ and didn’t understand them at all and have shunned them ever since. Finally after my last laptops motherboard started failing I decided it was time to take the leap to a Mac. The main reason I did this was because I’ve heard so many good things about them and I have had two iPhones and wanted to continue with Apple products. I waited for the new models to come out first before I got one because I have a habit of always wanting to get the new gizmos. Price is a little higher than what I’m used to but you get what you pay for. It was a little tough getting used to the OS right off the back, as a Windows user this is like going to a foreign country and trying to talk to someone there. I’ve had it for almost a 2 1/2 weeks now and so far I couldn’t be happier. There are very few flaws that I have found, the edge of the laptop is too “sharp” and I get lines on my wrists but my typing teacher would yell at me anyway for that. Performance wise this thing flies! I thought about getting the Macbook pro but could not justify spending more money and getting the same/lower specs (i.e. 160gb hard-drive in the pro, 250gb in the macbook, same processor, same graphics, same RAM, same battery). I can live without the SD slot, simple USB adaptor can fix that, no need for firewire and I don’t type in the dark so I can do without the backlight keyboard. At this rate I don’t see myself going back to PC anytime soon!

This mouse sucks, May 3, 2011

This review is from: 2.4g Wireless Mouse Mini Usb for Apple Mac Pc Laptop

I bought this mouse aware of the risk of buying something nobody else had reviewed. So as the first reviewer, I’ll try to be as clear as I can.

    First, the bad things:

The plastic feels really cheap. I’ve always bought Logitech mice and the difference between materials is astronomical. My first impression was that it is made from the same material as those chinese knock-off toys. When you click you can feel the cheapness I’m talking about.

The optical tracking thing of the mouse is one of the worst I’ve seen. First, the slot at the bottom is bigger than a regular mouse, which usually would make a mouse better, because it makes it more sensitive. Well, the problem here is that it is really weak. In my regular desk, which is painted in black, the mouse does not work. At all. I tried it in another desk, in wood-like finish, and it works OK. So the current solution for this is using a white piece of paper underneath. Second, the red light is annoying. Because the light feels stronger, and the plastic is cheap, you can see the light at the top. I usually work late at night, and it’s not even 7 pm and the light is already bothering me. So every time I move the mouse this bright light comes from my hand.

The DPI button is horrendously misplaced. It is just under the scroll wheel. Yes, being able to change the DPI from 800 to 1600 is great, but not accidentally.

To finish the “Bad” section, the transmitter is awful. And I mean awful in the way that I don’t even want to stick it in my computer. At least it has “ridges” to make it easy to pull out.

    Now, the good things:

Overall, the design is nice. But, of course, I can’t give them too much credit for that, since it was copied from the apple mouse. The only things that make both mice different are the transmitter (which is awful) and the buttons at the top (which, as I already said, one of them is incredibly out of place). Under the battery cover there is a slot for the transmitter.

The really positive thing about this mouse is the scroll wheel. It is really comfortable.

    The not-yet-analyzed things:

I can not tell you about battery life since I received the mouse today. All I can say is that it uses 2 AAA batteries.I probably won’t be able to comment on the battery life anytime soon, because I’m returning the mouse first thing tomorrow morning.

Overall: I give the mouse 2 stars. I was going to give it 1, but the scroll wheel made me change my mind.

Update: I forgot to say the mouse comes with a free cable tie. (I’m still returning it.)

This review is from: Mini DisplayPort to DVI-I Female Adapter for Mac

Apple’s current version of this adapter is for DVI-D cables only (no pin holes around the bar), and therefore won’t work with DVI-I cables (4 pin holes around the bar), which other than Apple displays, are the vast majority of cables out there. This 3rd party solution works perfectly for me to be able to connect to presentation systems that use the DVI-I interface, and also works with the other DVI formatted cables I have tried, including DVI-D. It therefore does everything the apple products does, allows more cable compatibility, and is significantly less expensive.

I have a Dell 2407WFP 24″ monitor. This adapter worked fine for using the monitor as a display, but I had a severe problem with interference with my wireless Internet while using the adapter (I’m connecting a MacBook Pro). Just pinging my router, packets started being dropped when I connected the monitor using the adapter, and all problems were fixed as soon as I disconnected the monitor. I just bought the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter MB570Z/A, and now wireless Internet works fine with the monitor connected. I’ve had good luck with non-Apple connectors / cables before (e.g., the 6ft Toslink to Mini Toslink Cable), but in this case, I’d stick with the Apple adapter, or at the least some other adapter that doesn’t have this interference problem.

A Major Overhaul of Office for Mac, but Still a Poor Stepbrother to the Windows Version, October 26, 2010

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What’s this?)

Before I start with the review, I would like to say a few things about myself and my experience with Microsoft Office products. I have been using various components of Microsoft Office for almost a couple of decades, on both Windows and Macintosh computers. Right now, I have a copy of Office 2008 on my Mac Mini , as well as Office 2007 on my Windows 7 (formerly Vista) laptop. I also occasionally use iWorks on my iPad, Google docs, and have had some experience with OpenOffice. I use word processing software on a daily basis, PowerPoint more or less regularly for the lectures that I give, Excel for various laboratory exercises, and Apple Mail or Outlook for part of my e-mailing needs.

I obtained my copy of Office 2011 through Amazon Vine products a day ahead of the official release, and have spent most of today playing with it and figuring out all of its new and noteworthy features. It is definitely a more than worthy successor of Office 2008, and a huge improvement across the board in almost every category. However, based on my experience, MS Office for Windows is still the gold standard in the category of business productivity software. This version of Office for Mac was supposed to be the first “real” Office in over a decade, and although it comes tantalizingly close to the equivalent Windows version, it is still far from a full-fledged clone. It will, however, make Macintosh computers respectable members of the professional business environment. The biggest improvement in that regard is the final inclusion of Outlook into the Mac version of the Office. Microsoft has also reinstated Visual Basic, which is

    Some General Observation

Installation was very smooth and quick. There was no need to remove the previous version of the Office. The full install took up about 1.3 GB of hard drive space.

Office 2011 feels more powerful, more feature-rich and faster than its predecessor. The increase in speed is definitely noticeable, and if you use Office a lot in your line of work, this in itself will make it well worth the upgrade.

In terms of look and feel, the greatest new addition to all Office components is the introduction of Ribbon. Ribbon is an interface where a set of toolbars is placed on tabs in a tab bar. It is highly customizable, and it is context sensitive – various tasks have different ribbon configuration. Microsoft started using Ribbon in Office 2007 in place of taskbars. However, their ribbon has caused a lot of confusion since it was a radical departure from the usual taskbars. Even though the exclusive use of Ribbon declutters the look of various Office applications, it was not too intuitive to use at first. Office 2011 uses both the Ribbon as well as the taskbars, thus making a better and smoother transition to the new functionality. In this sense Office 2011 seems a hybrid of Office 2007 for Windows and Office 2008 for Mac.

One of the major behind-the-scenes improvements of Office 2011 is the return of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), which was missing from previous versions of Office for Mac. This will facilitate creation of event-driven templates for all of the components of Office 2011. However, the greatest impact of the reintroduction of VBA will undoubtedly be felt in Excel, especially in creation of more sophisticated spreadsheets.

In recent months Microsoft has come up with an online version of Office that is sophisticated enough for most of one’s everyday needs, and is positioned to compete directly with Google Docs. Office 2011 is designed to take a full advantage of this new online environment, including online and real-time collaboration with remote colleagues, as well as ample (25 GB as of this writing) online storage in form of SkyDrive. It is possible to directly save and open SkyDrive files from any Office application, as well as drag-and-drop them using Microsoft Document Connection which comes as standard with this version of Office. Personally, I would have liked if it were possible to access SkyDrive through Finder, but overall I am fairly satisfied with its functionality.

    Word

One of the great new features is the publishing layouts. They turn Word into a serious desktop publishing tool, as well as a decent website editor. It will not replace Dreamweaver any time soon, but it will be more than effective for small-scale websites.

Word comes with many new themes and styles, which make…

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What’s this?)

When I reviewed the prior version of Office, I recommended that users stick with Office 2004. Finally, I can strongly recommend upgrading to Office 2011. I would wager that this will be the major version for the next five to six years, in the same way that 2004 has been widely adopted and stable for the last six years.

I should state at the outset that I am primarily a user of Word for the production of long, annotated documents. I also use Excel and Powerpoint, but would not consider myself a power-user of these applications. I have been using Microsoft Word since 1986. This review is mainly for people who have been Word/Office users and are wondering whether to upgrade.

All three versions of the Office for Mac 2011 suite contain Word, Excel and Powerpoint. The Home & Student version does not contain Outlook; the Home & Business and Academic versions DO contain Outlook. Outlook replaces Entourage. If you do intend to use Outlook, keep in mind that this version only syncs with Exchange Server 2007 or newer (check with your I.T. people to see if you are okay). Furthermore, Outlook is not merely a renaming of Entourage; some functions change and/or disappear. You can do a custom install of Office 2011 and keep Entourage if you wish.

As of late 2010, many of the negative comments about this version revolve around Outlook (missing features, syncing, import problems). If you are a power Outlook user, I would take this as a big warning flag and a potential reason to wait for the next update from Microsoft.

[Update 4/11: Microsoft released the first service pack for this suite in April of 2011. The update fixes a number of problems/shortcomings across the suite, including some that led to highly critical remarks about Outlook. For a list of changes, do a search for Microsoft Knowledge Base article 2525412.]

[Update 7/11: Office 2004 for Mac does NOT work under the recently released OS X Lion. This is a good opportunity to upgrade to Office 2011. Microsoft's Mac group has indicated, however, that it will be some months before this latest version exploits Lion's new features (e.g. autosave). I am finding no compatibility issues, however, between Lion and Office 2011.]

My snapshot of Microsoft’s latest release:

    Pros:
-Office 2011 is faster. It loads faster. It closes out faster. There seem to be very few delays in moving through very long documents. There is no sluggishness on my computer (2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo iMac with 2 GB of memory).
-The interface is improved from earlier versions. While I have qualms about it, I think it is the best one that Microsoft has offered for Office. After using the suite for the last 9 months, I have come to appreciate the context sensative ribbon. I find that I am spending less time digging for obscure commands.
-VBA support is back (critically important for many people; if you don’t know what it is, you probably don’t need it).
-Side-by-side arrangement of multiple documents. This sounds minor, but if you compose using multiple document windows, this will have you rejoicing. Why it has been so difficult to implement is a mystery (you could do it in earlier versions by tweaking Word or by sizing the windows manually). Now you can do it quickly from the “Window” menu. Thank you. Thank you. A million thank yous.
-Better ability to browse and import media from elsewhere on your Mac.
-I am intrigued by the new notebook view; it allows for scribbles and audio inputs.
-There is a new full screen mode which helps me focus on the document; I really like this feature but other people will find it hokey.
-Built-in support for collaborative document creation/editing and cloud computing.

    Cons:
-The interface may be improved from earlier versions, but the intent was clearly to make it more like the Windows version of Office rather than exploit OS X. I think the Mac group at Microsoft is between a rock and a hard place on this one: they can choose to make Office more consistent across platforms (think about the demands placed on corporate I.T. departments that support PCs and Macs), or they can create something more unique and native to the Mac (i.e., fully optimized for the Mac). I would prefer the latter, but the former wins. Office for the Mac is handcuffed to Windows.
-I find the interface easier to use than old versions, but I still find myself fighting with it at times (e.g. the Excel sort button toggles between A to Z and Z to A each time you press it… why?).
-For power Excel users, this version does not yet have an Analysis Tool Pack.
-I would have liked to see a bit more discipline in how options are presented. To give an example, when choosing how to look at a particular Word document there are no less than four different places where one can specify some aspect of the page…
