"2 weeks in, doing great" 2010-07-01
By Aaron Price
Only owned the thing for 2 weeks, but so far, so good.

Good Stuff:

-Haven't let it stay on for 7 hours straight, but it looks like w/ brightness at minimum it could probably make 7 hours. Just took it on a car trip, and battery life wasn't a problem.

-I have no issues whatsoever with the touch pad. The texture makes you realize when you accidentally move off the pad, and I didn't find it "sticky" or irritating to use at all. Some also complained about the click bar being hard to click. There is one bar for both left and right clicking, so there is a "pivot" point in the middle that is very difficult to click. Just press closer to the edges. Synaptics "ipod-style" scrolling is great once you get the hang of it, but I also downloaded the newest software from the Synaptics site to let me do 2-finger scrolling. Both work well and I use them both regularly, depending on the distance I need to scroll.

-Windows 7 has been good to me so far. (coming from XP)

-Very pretty, very light.

-LONG power cords. Awesome.

-Performance: Great. I installed Photoshop CS3 and Flash CS4, and both run without a hitch, even simultaneously. Haven't tried installing any real videogames on the thing yet (screen is so small, not sure how enjoyable it would be), but the preloaded games already there run fine, and a few 2D games I've downloaded work fine as well.

Weird Stuff:

-ASUS must have had to use a dump-truck to load all that useless... crud... onto my computer. At least 20 programs with ASUS in the name were already present, and there were several other useless programs more confusingly named. It was very difficult to decide which I should remove. I ended up removing most of them through the control panel, except for "AI recover" (seemed actually NOT-useless, but haven't used it yet), and the "control panel," which allows you to adjust all you brightness, volume, and battery-type stuff in one place.

-The quoted 250 GB is split between two drives, one called "OS," (50 GB) and one called "DATA" (200 GB). Not really an issue, but the desktop is located within "OS," so no putting giant files on your desktop. I think when a program is installed, it uses "OS" space, but I don't know. It is still a mystery to me whether there are actually two physical drives in this computer, or one partitioned drive. I'm unclear on the reason they would do either. Again, not really an issue, but still kinda weird.

-Remember, no CD/DVD drive. Allows computer to be slimmer and lighter, but to install software you will either need to download it, or use an external optical drive. You probably don't want to buy this computer for watching DVDs in the car, unless you want a big external dvd drive hanging off it that whole time.

There doesn't seem to be much out there in the way of cases for this size of computer, but I found this one:

"Kensington K62569US SP12 12-inch Neoprene Sleeve for Notebook Computers (Black)"

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001M4HXT4/

and it's working great.

So, two weeks in, *5/5*

Hope it doesn't break after 366 days.

"Fantastic little companion for a road warrior" 2010-06-20
By Sawan Mahindrakar (cambridge, ma USA)
I bought this laptop specifically to function as a personal laptop, I have separate Lenovo that i use for work and it has been a very good companion. I use it mostly as a carry about around the house and watch videos on it, do a lot of browsing and recently been watching the World Cup 2010 live stream and in this capacity it is a champ. I have been surprised by the performance of the su7300 processor, there has hardly ever been any lag or cause for complaint. It also has seen some rough and tumble while travelling with me, i do week long trips for work. I must say it is a tough little laptop. The only con is the mouse button on the laptop, you really have to give it a good press for it to work. But the the rest including the screen and the keyboard have held up and are a joy to use. I haven't exactly measured battery life, but with daily around the house use, i get about 4 hours of battery life, although i must mention that i do not use the bloat-ware that Asus bundles with the laptop and have long since replace the OS with a copy of stock Windows 7.

I love it! I got it for my school work and it’s working great. Of course this kind of computers is not for heavy use, so I have another computer that I use to surf the net and do most of my work. Keyboard is not hard to get used to since it is smaller but it’s not as small as the other notebooks. The Battery life is not 9 hours, I’ve tried it lol however it is around 8 which is not a big difference so I’m ok with that. The screen is small but that is what you get for getting a notebook. The only reason that I’d not recommend this product for is with the Ipad you get the same features you look for in a notebook for school with a little bit more money.

Acer AOD250-1515 10.1-Inch White Netbook – Up to 9 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) Review

This netbook is great. I am not a computer expert, but I did manage to upgrade to 2 gigs of RAM. The three things that impress me the most are (1) its small size (much smaller than a notebook computer yet almost as versatile) which makes the Acer easy to carry around, yet the keyboard is fairly close to standard size; (2) its speed ; and (3) its WiFi capabilities are great without having to use any external devices to amplify the signals from any WiFi source I have tried.

While the unit seems to be a great value for its price point, it still has a low price point. I am concerned that my hamfisted typing skills may one day break a key or two on the keyboard. Similarly the “right click” and “left click” functions on its built-in control panel seem less sturdy than on a typical notebook computer or external mouse. I also think that opening and closing the “jaws” of the ACER netbook might cause the “joint” to wear out over time. Hopefully, the unit will become technically obsolete before any of these occurs. I suggest that other owners be gentle to the Acer. This is a fairly delicate piece of equipment.

I am very glad I purchased this netbook and will use it while traveling and teaching.

Gateway LT2110u 10.1-Inch White Netbook – Over 8 Hours of Battery Life for $285.72

Special Prices of Gateway LT2110u 10.1-Inch White Netbook – Over 8 Hours of Battery Life at Gateway Netbook Review shop

Love this netbook! Researching and reading reviews of all the top rated netbooks led me to choose Gateway. Perfect look, size and weight. Set up was a breeze – going through the initial windows setting up passwords etc. Connection to printer went smoothly. Keyboard is very easy to type on as it is almost full size, it’s just the shift and enter keys on the side which are smaller. Screen view is bright, sharp and clear. Touchpad is sensitive, and took me a bit to get used to, so I have a wireless mouse to use if I intend to work for a longer period of time – I’m just more used to that. I purchased the netbook to use at meetings, email, web surfing and travel. It’s meet all those needs quite easily. It’s so portable and easy to carry around. Screen view when reading documents is approx 1/3 to 1/2 the page at a time. For my uses the battery lasts a approx. 7 hours and 45 minutes. It takes a full 2 hours to fully charge the battery. Viewing video from youtube is not a problem – I feel that there’s more than enough memory on this netbook. Also through Amazon I purchased the Higher Ground 10″ mini shuttle case with cooling dock which is a fantastic case – I mention it because when I use it for 4-5 hours at a time the cooling dock really does it’s job.

    Disappointed – Daiseedesign –
I bought this netbook for college purposes it handy and very compact but it only comes with the windows 7 start which mean you have a certain amount of time to use the programs and now I have to spend another dollars on top of the 0 to buy the programs and like I said before I’m a college student so I had enough to get te computer but now I have to try and save up so I can buy windows 7 and my collgeg books. So I kinda wished I read more into it and saw that the windows 7 wasn’t a trailthing or I wouldn’t have wasted my money. The netbook it’s self is good it’s stays charged and has long life it was giving me trouble on connecting to my wifi but that was an operator error.

Love my Little Notebook – J. Vawter – Seattle WA
I bought the Gateway LT a month ago. I had the option to get a larger bigger and fancier one but insisted to my husband I wanted something portable. I also could have opted for an ipad which I want some day but right now I needed something more computer-y. My concerns were viewing the screen and keyboard. I went to Best Buy to try a few small ones out. I liked this keyboard the best and the looks of the Gateway. Needless to say I purchased it on Amazon. I am very pleased. My husband immediately made jokes about my little computer but after lugging his big one around, he started asking if he could use mine. The size of the keyboard does not bother me at all and I did transcription for years, so a lot of typing. I do recommend learning to zoom your screen in and out with the touch pad. I use that quite a bit. If not use the page menu and do it there. I also went to Office Depot and picked up a toggle mouse so I didn’t have to use the touch pad all the time. For 299.00 you can’t go wrong. I toss it in my purse and go. I use MS Works on it and thought I might not like that but so far its fine. Again, very happy with this little computer!!

Gateway LT2108u – Earl Donnette, Jr. – Woodbridge, VA USA
This Netbook is good in that it is light and easy to carry around. Performance is ok but, I feel that I will have to add another 1GB of memory to download certain items off the internet.

Toshiba Mini NB205-N230 (NB200 series) 10.1-Inch Black Onyx Netbook – 9 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)

Special Prices of Toshiba Mini NB205-N230 (NB200 series) 10.1-Inch Black Onyx Netbook – 9 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) at Gateway Netbook Review shop

This is now previous generation model. I got it for well under 0. I still highly recommend it.

BTW, I upgraded mine to 2gig.

    Pros
    * Excellent lcd color and brightness
    * Best in class netbook keyboard. Similar to apple’s chiclet keyboard. Nice feel and keydepth for the smaller than standard key. Really like arrowpad layout.
    * Feels quite durable
    * I actually like how 6-battery sticks out the back, acts as a handle to hold on to when using the computer, standing up draped over your forearm.
    * Neato HDD shake protection with 3D sensor. When you shake it the hard drive moves the arm to safe area. You can watch hdd applet shows the hard drive arm and orientation as you rotate the netbook.
    * Good wifi range. I get noticeably better wifi signal detection on this than my other laptops.
    * Big touchpad (note in cons, bottom touchpad unusable)
    * Lighted power button below screen acts as keyboard light (which could also be a con, I like it)
    * I like startup/shutdown time, less than half minute — first time it may be slower, as windows 7 configures the system. 5 second sleep/wake time.
    * Includes bluetooth, which is no longer included in current gen

    Cons
    * Tiny single speaker. Out of the box, it’s only ok for windows beep noises. You can make it usable loud by turning on “loudness equalization” from control panel>Sound settings>Realtek HD driver
    * touchpad is not usable at the bottom 3/4 inch. It looks and feel likes touchpad, but your scrolling and pointer will just stop before touching the buttons. A shame, that the touchpad isn’t as big as it looks.
    * no multitouch touch pad that current gen touchpads support. But AFAIK, Windows 7 starter does not support multitouch anyway.
    * typical bloatware. chuck it.
    * no screen rotation. I could not find a way to activate hardware screen rotation to use it vertically like a ebook reader. I tried registry hack, freeware hardware rotation util, googling, nothing. I wonder if linux intel drivers are capable of rotation? Anyway, as a satisfactory work around I use foxit pdf reader and fbreader ebook (epub) reader, both of which have software screen rotation and full screen feature that makes this an ebook reader (nb: can’t read drm books).
    * No wifi N. But when would you really want to use N speed on a netbook? Not like you are going to be hard core gaming or streaming HD videos to it.
    * How do I create and restore system backup without DVD? I’m hoping I can do it from a usb stick.

    Misc
    * Windows 7 Starter is fine by me. The main complaint seems to be about lack of wallpaper customization. Big whoop. When I’m working on my laptop I’m not looking at my wallpaper. I put the picture gadget to put in the center of the desktop. If you want to use it as a digital photo frame, use the photo screensaver. Done.
    * Non HD videos only. All my 720×480 DVD and TV shows run fine. Once you get to 720 line videos (which won’t fit on a 600 line screen anyway), the CPU is chocking. Goes without saying, serious gaming is a no go.
    * Battery life around 6.5 hours, I’m a heavy user, using lots of multimedia, loaded 10 programs. I upgraded 2gig, bright screen.
    * Charge from 5% to 100% in 4 hours.
    * Suspend mode uses 1 watt. Normal use is 10 to 15 watts. Except when I transport it, I usually keep mine on suspend mode instead of shutting down.
    * For videos I downloaded the CCCP codec/video pack

    Note
    * Upgrade your webcam software from panasonic support site. It’s much better.
    * Upgrade HDD driver from Panasonic support site, the machine shuts down faster

Great when it works – Tell It Like It Is – good ole USA
Arrived promptly. Worked fine out of the box. Comes with Windows 7 Starter. Some limitation of features, but this is probably not going to be your primary computer. It’s a little larger than most other netbooks. After 6 weeks of infrequent use, the computer wouldn’t do a thing. Thought it was a bad power supply. Went to the Toshiba web site and filled out a problem report. Had to pay for one way shipping to Toshiba in California. Cost about . Thought this was a rip off. Anyway, they replaced the keyboard, updated the BIOS, and had it back to me within a week. Very fast turnaround. I just wish it hadn’t broken in the first place. The warranty is the standard 12 months. Hopefully it will do OK from here out.

If I had it to do over, I’d look really hard at the Sony VAIO line.

The sound does not work – Gerald Isaacson – Somerset, NJ USA
I bought this netbook for travel. Got the extra memory and separate optical drive as well. I set up the rescue disks, loaded Office, and went off on a six week trip to Asia. The first time I used the netbook, I noticed that there was a problem with the sound. The internal microphone was always “on” and sending room and even keyboard sounds to the puny speaker, creating feedback and noise. The only way to stop it was to turn off the speaker. Plugging in a headset to use Skype revealed another problem. The audio software noticed that an external mic and headphone were attached. But no sound from the mic got into the computer. I bought another headset, thinking there was a problem with the microphone on my original headset. Same problem. The Toshiba on-line forums were no help. Many people complained of the problem but there were no solutions. I reinstalled the audio drivers. Same problem. I called Toshiba and the technician had me restore the original operating system. After that 3 hour ordeal, the original problems were still there. Now Toshiba wants me to return the defective unit to them, at my expense, so they can try to repair it. While I was drawn to this unit because of its lightness and long battery life, in reality it has turned out to be a big letdown. Toshiba shipped me a defective netbook but I have to pay to return it to them. This was my second Toshiba laptop. It will be my last.

Only get for e-mail – CSAR Pilot –
I purchased this computer for its small size and price. I also purchased extra memory, doubling the standard RAM.
As far as e-mail and small tasks are concerned, this computer will suffice. However, if you want to do something like watch an iTunes movie, youtube, or anything that plays off the memory/hard drive, the video skips, lags, and is frustraing to the point of not being watchable.
To give you an idea, the Windows Performance Experience is 2.0 out of 7.9. This means that even while playing a simple game such as solitaire, the video skips and is not smooth when the cards fall down after winning.
One other thing I’ve noticed is that testing it out using skype with another laptop in the same room, this computer’s video quality is by far subpar compared to a 3 year old laptop. This was confirmed by simply surfing the internet.
I also purchased this computer because it came loaded with windows 7, I was highly annoyed though, that you have to pay for an upgrade that allows you to do simple stuff like change your wallpaper, and watch a DVD with an external drive.
By far, this is the slowest computer out of the box I’ve ever owned, and I highly regret not buying another macbook.
The only thing I like about this computer is that it is light and small, and the price makes it somewhat disposable.

Acer Aspire One 521 as well as 721 examination

Acer Aspire One 521 as well as 721 examination

On the surface Acer’s 10.1-inch Aspire One 521 and 11.6-inch Aspire One 721 crop up to be fairly run-of-the-mill netbooks — or ultraportables for those that have been morally against to calling the laptop with a 11.6-inch arrangement the netbook. They’re rather than small machines, magnitude only about an inch thick, and ring up during underneath $430. But there’s the lot more than meets a eye with this Aspire One duo – instead of Intel Atom or ULV processors, both are powered by the brand-new AMD 1.7GHz Athlon II Neo K125 processor as well as promise 1080p playback interjection to ATI Radeon HD 4225 graphics. We’ve positively been pumped about these dual systems given their French debut, but fear of AMD’s customarily poor battery life as well as boiling temperatures have been holding us back from all-out excitement. Do we have zero to fear but fright itself? We’ve spent a final couple of days with these dual systems, as well as will reveal all in the full examination after a break. Look and feel

Acer Aspire One 521 as well as 721 examination

The Aspire One 521 as well as 721 clearly share the same pattern birthright, though they’re patently really different, as shown in a picture on top of. For a single, a 11.6-inch 721 is obviously longer than a 10.1-inch 521, yet both are still awfully portable as well as usually magnitude 1.1-inches at their thickest indicate. The 721 weighs in at 3.1 pounds, while a not as big 521 is a somewhat lighter 2.8 pounds. However, a clearest differentiator between the two is their lids. The 521’s glossy mocha cover has the Tetris-like settlement that is ornate with the vast china Aspire One logo. We’ve picked on this pattern decision the bit in previous posts, but we’re happy to echo the dislike. A bit of branding here or there has never worried us most, though do we need someone across a coffee shop seeing a large trademark upon our laptop? Nope, and it only seems run-down. We much prefer a small Acer logo on the 721’s matte mesh lid, which will be available in red, navy and black.

In conditions of the setup peculiarity, the two systems have been done wholly done of plastic, and we noticed a bottom shade was coming loose on both machines. We find this to be a box with many budget Acers — they aren’t a many permanent systems, but for a cost they’re decently done. The 521 as well as 721 have a same allocation of ports – an HDMI, VGA, as well as a single USB port live upon the left corner, while an one more two USB jacks, Ethernet as well as headphone and microphone sockets have been positioned on the right. Both additionally have 3-in-1 label readers. The bottom of a appurtenance provides easy entrance to both a IMPEL as well as tough drive compartments, so you shouldn’t have the problem swapping them out if that’s your thing.

    Keyboard, touchpad and screen

Acer Aspire One 521 as well as 721 examination

The 521 as well as 721 have the same chiclet keyboards which Acer’s been using on its new netbooks as well as laptops, albeit a 521’s is narrower. While the rounded keys have been well-spaced as well as have a slight gap between them, overall you only find them to be as well prosaic. We got used to typing upon a really level panel, though a plastic keys still don’t unequivocally mold to your fingers. Both systems have rather than tiny touchpads that have been flush with a metal-like palmrest. They’re fine for navigating, though a multitouch gestures are really off — two finger scrolling barely worked in Firefox as well as IE. We similar to a dedicated right as well as left rodent buttons, yet a ones on a 721 have been incredibly unbending.

The 521 has a typical 10.1-inch, 1024×600 fortitude netbook arrangement, but given its ability to hoop 720p calm we wish it had a aloft 1366×768 resolution like the 11.6-inch 721. Obviously, a 721’s 11.6 inch shade is roomier; you elite regulating it over a 521 to write this examination as you could keep mixed windows open upon the shade. Both LCDs had decent horizontal perspective angles, though a vertical angles were pretty trashy. The tiny machines have two speakers underneath the front edge – they aren’t starting to fill a vast room, but they’ll do when it comes to watching the movie or listening to a little tunes whilst working.

Performance, graphics as well as battery life

Acer Aspire One 521 as well as 721 examination

We know, this is part of the examination you’ve been watchful for – the part where you answer if AMD has done improvements in battery holdup, graphics, and feverishness, as well as if they can start to really contest with Intel in a small laptop space. Well, the answer isn’t that cut as well as dry, though we’re happy with what we’ve seen. On the opening side of things, a 1.7GHz Athlon II Neo processor scored right in in between Intel Atom and Intel ULV CPUs upon benchmarks, which in our perspective is the perfect place to be. We’ll let the benchmarks below speak for themselves, though in bland opening we found the systems to be comparatively snappy – especially after we uninstalled a McAfee Internet Suite. Both the 521 as well as 721 kept up with our bland chores, which enclosed concurrently essay in Microsoft Word 2007, surfing the web in Firefox, chatting in Digsby, as well as checking the Twitter feeds in Tweetdeck. When we threw in the 720p video into a brew, you noticed it took a few more seconds to open a file, though it played back flawlessly.

    Toshiba Mini NB305 (Intel Atom N450) 1272 156 6:30

And graphics is just where a single core AMD Athlon II Neo / ATI Radeon HD 4225 combo beats any Atom-based netbook, as well as even rivals NVIDIA Ion based systems. (Note: you haven’t reviewed the $484 Eee PC 1201PN that is the usually Ion 2 complement on a market). The 521 as well as 721 didn’t shrug during playing local 720p and 1080p files – they even played them uniformly when outputted to the 40-inch HDTV via HDMI. They additionally handled 720p YouTube videos similar to champs; though starting up to a 1080p environment caused stuttering. On a gaming front, the machines aren’t starting to slice by any initial chairman shooters, though they managed an admirable 28fps in World of Warcraft. That’s unequivocally not too shabby, as well as NVIDIA’s Ion systems are no longer a only netbooks on a marketplace that can claim higher graphics opening. And there’s no doubt that ATI’s Radeon HD 4225 graphics is a better preference than Broadcom’s Crystal HD decoder — a ATI graphics didn’t force us to choose a specific browser or program for personification behind high-def video as Broadcom’s chip did upon the Dell Mini 10.

So, that battery holdup… AMD has definitely done strides in which locus, yet we’d still like to see some-more when it comes to continuation. When you reviewed a Lenovo ThinkPad X100e with the 1.6Ghz AMD Athlon Neo MV-40 as well as really large 63Wh battery, the system didn’t run for longer than four hours on the video outline battery exam, that loops a same standard def video at 65 percent shade lightness. Both the 521 as well as 721 with only 48Wh batteries got over three hours upon which same test – a 521 ran for four hours as well as two minutes as well as a 721 for 3.5. In everyday use you saw each get about a half an hour to 45 mins more runtime. Sure, we wish these dual got on top of 5 hours for gentle NY to LA craft rides as well as but the disbelief Intel Atom netbooks with the same batteries would last longer on the charge, but with a combined opening you get from the 521 as well as 721 it’s a sacrifice you assume a little will be peaceful to have. (Note: we’ve asked Acer about extended battery options, and we will update this review when we get an answer behind We also saw improvement in terms of heat – both systems did get somewhat warm upon a left side nearby a air blower, but when we kept them upon our lap it wasn’t bothersome as well as didn’t bake by our jeans similar to a X100e.

A quick note upon configurations — whilst both have the same processor and graphics, there are a little slight spec differences. The $349.99 chronicle of the 521 comes with Windows 7 Starter, the 250GB tough drive as well as 1GB of IMPEL. The $429.99 721, upon a other hand, has 2GB of IMPEL as well as runs Windows 7 Home Premium.

Acer continues to load these puppies up with quite the bit of software. There’s both Norton Antivirus as well as McAfee preloaded along with a Netflix as well as eBay shortcuts on a desktop. Removing most of this junk noticeably sped up opening.

    Wrap-up

Acer Aspire One 521 as well as 721 examination

We had a camber AMD was sitting on some great stuff given the series of laptop makers that have been picking up their brand-new chips, though, as they say, seeing is believing. These dual laptops aren’t perfect as well as their battery life is disappointing, though for their cost you have been tender. At $349 a Aspire One 521 is a single of the many absolute 10-inch netbooks on a marketplace right away, and though it may not final as long on the charge as Atom-powered one, it’s miles ahead in conditions of handling Flash as well as HD video. No, we’re not the greatest fans of the outrageous trademark upon the lid, but the cost as well as performance have been sure to win over someone looking for the 10-incher.

Though, if you had to select we’d go with the 721 — for $80 more than the 521 you get some-more than only the secondary machine with its wider screen as well as keyboard. Of course, if you consistently direct some-more than 4 hours of battery holdup you’ll wish to go with an Intel ULV laptop, but many of them price north of $700. And good, that’s exactly what AMD’s starting for — Acer now has dual incredibly affordable and moveable laptops that container more opening than most netbooks and bill ultraportables upon a marketplace.
