"Two Thumbs Up." 2010-03-09
By A. Smith (Bay Area, CA)
I bought this off [...] via Amazon while on the road since I had just bought a PS3 and didn't want to watch Blu-ray and play the PS3 for the first time on the hotel TV. I talked myself into this being ok since I was getting a computer monitor out of the deal that I can use when I get home. So far I'm pleased on both accounts. I plugged my laptop into it just to try it out and it looked like a very large, very sharp computer screen to me, played around with it a bit but haven't used it as a monitor again yet.

I think it looks excellent as an HDTV for PS3 games ("MLB 10: The Show" and "Bioshock 2" so far)and for movies, DVD and Blu-ray alike. I do agree with some others that it doesn't have the best horizontal (I think that's right, meaning you wouldn't want to sit on the floor and look up at it) viewing angle. It tilts a bit (20 degrees I believe) which helps. I used the PS3's suggested settings and set the color and sound on the monitor to Dynamic and although I'm no videophile I think it looks awesome. The sound isn't great but it's not unbearable and I wasn't expecting full dynamic sound from monitor speakers. That's all I got I guess, no buyer's remorse from me (until my wife finds out I bought a PS3 and TV while I was gone).

"Excellent!" 2010-03-08
By Victor Flores (Los Angeles, CA USA)
I was looking for a PC monitor + HDTV big enough to fit in my home office. After researching for the right model, I came to this and followed all the comments about it.

I did have some troubles trying to get the maximum resolution with my home PC, but figured out the video card was not able to keep up with it. I get a different result with my home notebook, and the video resolution I get from my TV signal is awesome.

I had to play a little bit with the color settings to max out the capabilities of this monitor-TV. But in general, I'd say it surpassed my expectations.

"Wow, what a set up!!!" 2010-03-02
By Joey (Clayton, NC USA)
This was a major upgrade from my older 20" Dell LCD Monitor. While the Dell LCD was the top of the line for it's day (2.5 years ago), this Samsung 1080p takes the "cake" in all areas by far, including sound. I sold my 42 1080p LCD TV", Bought this 25" 1080p, and now I have a TV and Monitor all in one. I have no complaints with this product at all. Everything performs better than expected. The Sound is better than expected also. If you read some reviews on here, you would not think so. If you are looking to have one display for both TV and Monitor, this is a great purchase. I have Direct TV hooked into the HDMI and the computer connected into the DVI. Still have one HDMI left for the PS3. Just hit the source button on the remote to go between the HDMI source and the "computer" DVI. Very simple to hook up. This TV with mount is lighter than my Dell, another plus for me.

*One suggestion*...... If you are using for the computer, just let the computer automatic download the drivers. I did not use the Driver CD that came with the TV and I have found over the years with monitors, your computer will download what it needs to run it.

Again set up is a snap, 10 minutes total and was gaming away.

#1 I'm using DVI with my custom made computer.

 "Great Unit." 2010-03-02
By D. Brown (Clermont, FL)
We have the UN55B7100WF which has the internet capabilities over the standard 7000 if I am correct. The picture quality is unreal for this whole line of TV's. The 1.177" thickness of the unit is amazing. I am blown away at the quality with the standard Cable box which only displays at 1080i instead of 1080p. I haven't tried a blueray player yet, but I am certain that it will surpass all my expectations. This is the first addition to our Home theater. The speakers on the unit are decent, but not home theater quality, but with even that said, I still rate this TV as a 5 out of 5. Very pleased and impressed with this unit.

"Great price! Great TV! and about delivery, quick start and Wii" 2010-02-27
By Amazon frequent shopper
We're usually Sony TV buyers but got sold on the LED idea when we saw how great the screen picture is when viewing from the side - not distorted. Sony does have LED but it is still new which means still expensive. The Samsung 7000 came out a year ago so is now half of what it cost last year! (Now that there is already an 8000.) The 7000 is the same as the 7100 sold in Best Buy except for the frame or something minor. Through Amazon, as of last week, we got this for 300 dollars less than buying local, no tax and no delivery charges - super deal, couldn't resist, though this is the most expensive thing we've ever bought on Amazon.

Delivery was very good. Amazon advertises that the TV can be at your place in 3 days. For us, that meant it was in our city in 2 days. The delivery company didn't call us on checkout but did call us the day after it got to our city (4 days). They gave a 3 hour window for the next day which is pretty good and were here as they said (Got TV in 5 days from ordering.) Brought the TV just where we wanted it. Didn't unpack it because it was cold? They said to wait 2 hours. I'm no expert so I don't know if that was the truth or an excuse. But they were really nice. They gave instructions on unpacking and keeping the packing in case of a return or exchange.

Quick start is quick! Out of the box, plug, find channels and go! Already mounted on a stand out of the box. Love the picture as is without fine tuning. The back is designed maybe a little too slim, though. Not much space to get the connection for an ordinary cable in - had to squeeze it in its slot - couldn't use the screw type with no space to screw it in. There's much more space for HD connections which we don't have. Maybe when we add a blu-ray, etc.

Viewing distance with LED truly doesn't matter as the local sales guys say. We were afraid 55 would be too big for a 6-8 feet distance but it isn't.

Wii - if you don't already have one, you may need an HD-Wii cable (35 at gamestop, maybe cheaper elsewhere, plus there are 3rd party types). The original Wii cable has only 3 connections; you need the 5. Without it, we had sound, no color and fuzzy images. With it, and with Wii settings - Screen - TV resolution set to 480p, great!

This is Day 1 and we're loving it!

 "Great Decision" 2010-02-26
By Steve
After an exhaustive research project of about 1 month I came to the conclusion that the UN55B7000 was for us. We were replacing a Sony WEGA 42" projection LCD HDTV that was suffering from the dreaded blue smoke/cloud caused by the optical block. After using the new Samsung for a few days now I must say WOW, what a huge difference. We weren't reacting to the truely spectacular picture quality because of our Sony problems but because the details this screen shows out performed our Sony when it was new. 5 years of technology improvement really shows through in the 7000.

If you are reading this then you are where I was in th beginning wondering which one is right for you and your family. Well look no further this is the ticket. You might read about the shiny/glossy screen causing problems, well my living room is brightly lit in the morning with the large picture window facing east which is perpendicular to the TV, we have no issues with the glossy screen. In fact we both commented on how the picture looks brighter than the Sony did in the morning.

I've not hooked up the widgets so won't speak to them, although I have to admit I'm not in a hurry as we aren't interested in checking the weather with a widget or updating our Facebook from the TV. Plus the laptop is in the other room for those activities, in addition we have a PS3 that can do that as well, more or less.

If you are still undecided I suggest visiting [...] as you will find a wealth of information from the members of this great audio visual forum. Your brain will melt from the information but you will go away knowing what to do, I believe.

Enjoy your new Samsung as we are enjoying ours.

 "Awesome TV! Very pleased!" 2010-02-15
By Freddy G (Chicago, IL)
I bought this TV on January 29 with Amazon's 24-month free financing promotion to replace my old Samsung 50" DLP, which I've had for 4 years and is still working perfectly. Shipping was free and the TV was delivered right on time on Wednesday, February 3 by Pilot Delivery Services. I was told by the delivery men that they usually unpack the TV and turn it on to make sure the TV works, but because my TV had been in the cold delivery truck for almost 2 days (I live in Chicago), the delivery men recommended that I give the TV a couple hours to reach room temperature. I heeded their warning and about 2 hours later, I finally turned on the TV and WOW!

This TV definitely has a great picture and I am very pleased. I watch HDTV via an HD/DVR Comcast cable box and the picture is amazing. I have the TV connected to the cable box via HDMI 1, to a PS3 slim via HDMI 2, to my laptop via the PC input, and to my Samsung surround sound receiver via a digital optical cable. All connections produce vivid images and great sound. I have not really messed with any of the picture settings, as I think the picture looks great without tweaks. I do put the picture on Movie mode when I am watching a Blu Ray on the PS3, but I put the Dynamic Contrast back on (default setting is OFF on Movie mode). A lot of people complain or don't like the 3D-ish look of the Dynamic Contrast + 120hz refresh rate, but we really like it and always leave it on.

Although this TV only has a single tuner, I was able to get the Picture in Picture to work with 2 different channels, by splitting the cable before reaching the cable box, then using an HDMI from the cable box to the TV and a coaxial cable wire from the cable box to the ANT IN of the TV. Be sure to do a channel search on the TV input to obtain the channels for the sub-PiP screen. Note the sub-PiP screen will only show the local/over the air channels available in your area (at least for me), but the good news is that you can get the HD feed of those local channels on the sub channels (channel 2-1, etc).

Probably the best evidence I can give is the constant positive comments my wife gives me about TV. She was against the pricey purchase from the beginning, but she has definitely been won over and that should give the TV enough credibility on its own. We had a Super Bowl party and everyone kept raving about the TV (picture and thinness were the biggest comments).

The only feature of the TV that I have not been able to utilize is the Internet connectivity. I tried to connect the TV to the Internet via my cable modem (wired through my wireless router), but I was not able to get past the Internet Gateway portion of the Internet Connection test. Therefore, I cannot currently access any of the widgets, though I am not too disappointed as I would not normally not utilize them - I just wanted to see how they looked. I am sure the problem is with my wireless router (firewall or something), so I do not blame the TV. I should try going directly from the TV to the cable modem, but I have not tried that yet.

Lastly, this TV looks great mounted on the wall. I was going to buy the Samsung Ultra Slim mount, but I decided to get a far less expensive Cheetah Mount (also from Amazon) for around $30 with shipping and it works perfectly. I used a slight tilt on the mount and the TV hangs perfectly from the wall. I was very happy to save the $100 or so with the cheaper mount. I used the savings to purchase the Samsung-backed 3 year extended warranty from Amazon as well.

Overall, perhaps I am not as technically picky as most people who buy TVs at this price range are, but I have absolutely no complaints about this TV and am very happy with my purchase. I would recommend this TV to anyone and one of my friends recently purchased the 46" 6000 series model after viewing my TV. I will update my review if I come across anything I forgot to mention or any negatives I encounter.

"As Good as it Gets..." 2010-02-14
By Dave
My only negative is the wireless internet connection. It works OK but too slow to be very useful. One good surprise was the way it handled a 16 gig usb chip filled with photos and music. Everything looks and sounds great with a good user interface and logical default settings. As for the TV picture itself I've found none better...

"No Support-Bad Firmare-Amazon Video On Demand Started Problem" 2010-01-17
By Brad Moody
Bad day. Downloaded Amazon.com video on demand widget. Started widget and it said I needed firmware update. Went to software update screen and it confirmed that new software was available. Downloaded Version T-CHE9AUSAC-1009.2.
Went back to widgets. Couldn't connect.
Went to network setup page and found all connection/setup information wiped.
Tried to re-enter manually and things began to go wrong. Tried to select "manual" and it wouldn't allow selection. Screen did allow me to enter numbers manually however. Tried network test and joy, it proclaimed success.
Went back to widgets and again couldn't connect. Went back to network set up screen and lo and behold all network set up information had been wiped again. Repeated same procedure with same results.
Auto setup of network did not function.
Assumed problem was with new version of software (firmware?). Tried to find prior version on Samsung site but nothing there!
Spent two hours on phone with Samsung "support" and the best they could do was promise to send "disk" of firmware in the mail. 7-14 biz days, naturally. Not clear that the firmware will be a correct or even an earlier version.
Absolutely clear that no one is USA support center knows anything about the networking features of this TV.
If you sell a TV for this much money and can't support it any better, you are asking for trouble.
I wonder if Amazon knows that its video on demand widget is destroying the networking functionality of these machines?
CNET's discussion of this unit says that it has now been discontinued, apparently because of a patent dispute with Sharp over the LED backlighting technology.
Beware

 "Could Not Be Happier!" 2010-01-13
By Catch & Blur (Washington)
Let me preface this review by saying that my knowledge of electronics is above average, but I am not a techy guy by any means, so my review will be more helpful for people that speak in laymens terms like me. :)

Simply put, this TV is absolutely amazing! Everything that every other review has said thus far is spot on in terms of picture quality and the robust customization options for finding the right settings for your home environment. Out of the box, the default settings on this TV make everything look "hyper-real," or also referred to as the "soap opera syndrome." It's amazing, if not creepy, at first, but most people will prefer to have a more cinematic experience. By making a couple of simple adjustments, you can tone down the hyper-real look and get a gorgeous picture with breath-taking clarity and color. CNET created an easy-to-follow guide for optimal settings on this TV and with only a couple of tweaks, I found their settings to be perfect.

I personally don't have any complaints about the reflective screen, as my living room only has one window, but if your floor plan is different, just be warned. I have one ceiling fan/light combo in the middle of the room, but once the TV is on, you can't see it. Not even during dark scenes.

For you gamers out there, note that I have a PS3, X360 and Wii all connected and everything looks fantastic! With 4 HDMI slots, there's plenty of room and with Samsung's "Game Mode" option, you will not be disappointed with the performance of even the most chaotic on-screen action of games.

You hear lots of people compare the "inky blacks" of all TVs to Pioneer's Kuro Elite series, which I have no experience with, so I can't offer an opinion one way or the other. What I can tell you is that based on my experience with other CRTs, Plasmas and DLPs, these are the deepest blacks I've ever seen on a TV.

In summary, I can't say enough positive things about this set. As with anything, there's bound to be some minor gripes from people just depending on their personal tastes, but I found myself to be completely satisfied with no desire to even consider another TV. The picture is so clear that a view out of the window next to it barely looks any different and that's scary. It's bright, colorful, user friendly for any skill level and overall the most happy I've ever been with a TV purchase. The price tag is definitely something to draw pause, but if you're in the market and have earmarked some rainy day funds, you could do far worse than this gorgeous attraction.

"The best of the bunch" 2010-01-12
By R. Whitelaw (Morgan Hill, CA USA)
I have been looking for a big screen for a while now. Years even. I had pretty much resolved that I was going to get the Sony XBR 8. It has local dimming and is nearly universally referred to as the best LCD unit out there. My problem was that I wanted something with some of the more modern connectivity and interactive bells and whistles. The Sony XBR 9 and 10 added some functions, but were inferior to the XBR 8. Then came the Samsung 8500 series. Just like the XBR 8, it does not do edge lighting - but rather uses LED for lighting only in the areas that need it (local dimming - it REALLY gives you deep blacks). I got a chance to see the Sony XBR 8 and the Samsung 8500 side by side and while the Sony was good... the Samsung took the game to a whole new level.

To give you an idea of my setup, I have DirecTV and a PS3 which I use to play my Blu-Ray, Netflix and DVD discs.

The very first thing you will want to do when you hook up your set is connect it to the internet and check for updates. When the set was delivered, I jumped right in and start checking out the picture quality with DirecTV. As I went through channels, some in HD, I was starting to get worried. I was seeing some areas that seemed washed out and was noticing things that had me thinking that the set was not handling motion as well as I had seen in the showroom. However, once I checked for updates, found some, and installed them, everything was well. The issues I was noticing went away and the set performed flawlessly. Now any items I see are the result of the quality of the content.

CONNECTING IT: Do NOT pay tons of money for HDMI cables. You can trust me on this. I bought one $99 cable a $45 cable and a $9.99 cable. I tested all three and there was absolutely no difference in picture quality. The bottom line is that the signal is digital... it is a string of ones and zeros. You either get a picture or you don't. I tested these cables for a week and was able to return the expensive ones. This is not like the old stereo speaker cables or component cables that used to connect your tape deck to your receiver or your receiver to your TV. You could actually make an argument for expensive cables in those cases because it actually carried the signal. In this case, it just does not make a difference.

The HD content on DirecTV looks amazing. The lower resolutions stuff is REALLY going to stand out as bad, but that is the result of the source.

Netflix content surprised me. Now you can get Netflix content off a variety of boxes... so I cannot comment on all of them. However, I can tell you that with either an xbox 360 or a PS3, you are going to be pleasantly surprised by the quality this set gives you. The HD content on netflix is not quite as dazzling as your going to come to expect from HD, but it is amazing considering it is streaming material.

The quality of Blu-Ray discs (I have so far only played Star Trek and 300, but they are STUNNING) on the PS 3 is top notch. If you have an upscaling DVD player (Which the PS 3 does) you will find that the DVDs will look better than you have ever seen them look before. I just sat down to watch 'V for Vendetta' on DVD and it looked amazing. The upscaling is definitely improving the experience and the Samsung is really making it look its best.

Whatever you connect to the Samsung 8500 is going to look amazing. However, don't count on them sounding amazing. The built in speakers are a bit problematic. They seem to be pointing towards the back of the unit. As built in speaker go, I have heard much better. I am currently shopping for some external speakers. I suppose the good news here is that the unit has easy support for external speakers.

The interface is also a bit of a pain. Not horrible, but a bit wonky and the menus seem to lag a bit behind input from the remote. The one ray of sunshine in this is that you will find that fine tuning the picture is relatively easy and straightforward. I was able to get a picture I was happy with after about 20 minutes of fiddling - without ever having to dig up the manual. Also, the presets are actually pretty good. I don't think you need to tweak the "Movie" setting at all if you are doing a Blu Ray or DVD night with the lights turned off and some popcorn in your lap.

It integrates easily with a ton of things from iPods to iPhones and hard drives. It also supports widgets - but I have to admit I have not really jumped onto the bandwagon just yet.

The delivery from Amazon came off without a hitch. The guys brought it in, set it up and let me do a quick inspection to make sure it was not damaged in any way.

While the pricetag may seem a bit high, I think you will find that the price on Amazon is just about the best out there. I did quite a bit of shopping and found I was saving more than a few hundred dollars buying it on Amazon - it also helped that I had a ton of Amazon gift certificates at the ready! If you are on Amazon Prime, delivery is then free and once you do all the math, you are saving a whole lot of money.

But, is it worth the extra grand to get this unit instead of the Sony XBR 8? No doubt in my mind. I have since gone back to the store and seen the Sony and can clearly see the contrast difference. The 8500 just blows everything else out of the water when it comes to reproducing those deep, rich blacks. With the better HD quality source, you are going to feel like you could reach right into the set and grab ahold of Leonardo DiCaprios spindly little neck.

 "Samsung 8500" 2010-01-05
By D. Ruehle
I've been waiting for this TV for quite a while and I was really sad to see MidlifeCrisis' opinion that the 8000 actually had a better picture. I went to my local video store to do my own assessment. First, both TV's are great, but the color on the 8500 is absolutely perfect. It is very natural and lifelike. The array of LEDs really helps the overall quality become completely natural across the entire screen, side to side and top to bottom. Is the picture worth $1,200? I don't think so. So I'll wait until the price drops to a more reasonable level. One other item I wanted to clear up. Many folks have commented on how the picture drops off at 15 or 30 deg. of viewing angle. This worried me as I pictured how my computer screen really drops off at very small offset from head on... This TV is nothing like my computer LCD! Sure the picture drops off a little, but I went up to about 80 degrees off center and could still see the entire picture just fine. Go take a look and I'm sure you'll be impressed... The only negative thing I can find with this TV (other than the price) is the screen. Why couldn't they have a matte screen option for us folks with lots of windows in our rooms?

 "No buyers remorse here!" 2009-12-29
By B. CELLIO (Columbus, OH)
I'll review the TV and my experience with Amazon.

First off, the TV is beautiful. Picture clarity is as advertised. Its been said many times before, you simply can not beat this TV with anything currently in production.

Yahoo widgets are pretty worthless, but I didn't get this TV to check my fantasy football team score anyway, or the weather for that matter. They are very slow/sluggish. Perhaps they will improve this with some firmware updates.

Wife and I watch a lot of blue-ray movies and this TV displays them perfectly. I'm often amazed even after a month of ownership at the clarity of the movies and the colors in this movie. I haven't had any blooming effects, at least any that were noticeable.

Its pretty easy to set up and navigating the number of menu options available are pretty easy, although my hands do have a bit of trouble w/ the remote "ipod" type wheel, although it does click as well. Although I bought a harmony 1100 to use with this tv and other components so I don't' have this problem anymore!

I'm getting this TV professionally calibrated in 3 weeks, so I'll update my review once I've had that done to see how this baby really shines!

Amazon's service for my order left a lot to be desired. First TV showed up damaged which was a huge disappointment. A quick call to Amazon and some cash back on my purchase resolved this. They shipped out a replacement unit that day and it arrived at my home in less than a week. This TV arrived in perfect condition. You can't really fault Amazon as much as you can the delivery service. Its a roll of the die for experiences.

I would without a hesitation recommend this TV if its in your budget range. I saved up for about a year to purchase a TV and held out for a while before settling on this TV. Purchase price was $3700 from Amazon. I see its gone back up, purchased this unit the week of Thanksgiving.

“nothing more to say…just buy it” 2009-11-02
By Christopher Nelson (Los Angeles, CA)
There’s nothing to say that hasn’t already been said. I researched a ton as well, went into Best Buy and looked at a bunch of TVs side by side, settled on this Samsung, and have never looked back. I’ve had it for about two months now and have zero complaints. HD broadcasts look amazing, Xbox360 games look even better, and shows filmed in true HD (like Planet Earth) will blow your mind. DVD’s played from the Xbox through an HDMI input look shockingly good. I wish that the third HDMI input was on the back instead of the side, but that’s a minor quibble. Everyone who sees the TV — on or off — thinks I paid WAY more than $670 for it.

Probably the only TV that I have seen that bests this one in picture is the $4500 Pioneer Kuro Elite, and I’ve seen my fair share. Sports are particularly great, little to no pixellation or motion blur. And just as everyone else says, don’t let the 720p deter you. It just means that you’re not paying top dollar for a technology that makes almost no difference at this size (if any). I sit about 10 feet away from this TV in a La-z-boy and am in heaven every minute. You just can’t go wrong.

“BETTER picture than the Panasonic TC-P42S1!” 2009-10-30
By Jimmy (USA)
It seems almost pointless to add my 2 cents to all the positive reviews for this Samsung, so I will be brief. I have owned several HDTV’s both LCD and plasma. Panasonic, LG, Olevia, JVC, Sony and Samsung. LCD TV’s have their advantages (no glare & less power consumption) however plasma TV rendering of colors & contrast simply outmatch any LCD I’ve seen. In my opinion, these are the most important factors in picture quality. All of my LCD’s including the LG 120hz I owned had comic book colors and severe ghosting / image blurring. It was very annoying, so much so that I finally sold them all! Regarding the Panasonic S1 Series 1080p 42” Plasma. Although the Panasonic had a good picture, this Samsung has an overall BETTER picture with more features. Yes, the Samsung is 720p (and thus should provide a less detailed picture) but even when viewing 1080p blu ray movies, its picture is superior. At a viewing distance of 10ft, my eyes simply cannot see any measurable loss in image detail when compared to the 1080p Panasonic. However, where this Samsung really excels is in its more fluid, clean images with more realistic but brilliant colors. NO background noise, NO problem with red & greens, (both of which the Panasonic suffers) a better ability to handle SD broadcast AND a brilliant & accurate HD picture. Also, unlike the Panasonic, this Samsung has a VGA input, analog audio output jacks and a far more intuitive program menu. More importantly the Samsung has a wider range of picture controls including gamma, white level, flesh level, film mode, 3 levels of dark or dynamic contrast and various other settings which cannot be adjusted on the Panasonic. There is much more that goes into a TV than numbers on a paper. Specs often tell very little about picture quality. Just look at the low end brands with their high specs and abysmal picture quality…you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure this out! The panel and picture processing are vital to achieve quality images. All I can say is that with proper set up, this Samsung’s picture quality is stunning…and for less than $600 its a steal.

“Superb quality at a great price” 2009-10-28
By Mark Olwick (Burlington, WA USA)

I researched the heck out of my first flat screen TV and after reading all the glowing reviews of this set, I bought it. I have to say, this TV has absolutely superb image quality, even in bright light. Nice, rich, deep blacks that plasma’s are known for, accurate and vibrant colors, etc. Don’t worry about it being 720P - no one is broadcasting in 1080P anyway! The HD quality is stunning - it looks like you’re seeing things in person. Incredible clarity. The high refresh rate allows me to watch sports with absolutely no streaking that some LCD TV’s have with lower refresh rates.

Amazon’s fast and free delivery was also very easy. The shipper called, set up a date and time, then came in and set it up for me. It could not have been any smoother or easier.

This gets my highest recommendation.

I bought this based on the reviews - turned out to be a good decision - great picture and plenty of inputs - you need them if you have Roku, blu ray, vcr, and a dvd player. Only negative would be the sound - satisfactory but certainly could be better. Don’t think you can beat it for what you get for the price!

It's easy to get crazy trying to make a decision on the vast array of fine TV's on the market. I made the decision to go this XBR9 route and I am more than pleased with the outcome. The picture quality is great, the looks, the feel, and the build are all Sony. After spending mega hours researching TV's, what I found is that everyone has an opinion, and nothing out there has been labeled perfect, so save yourself some time and just buy quality. The are more features than most people will ever use, so don't get hung up and just sit back and watch a fine TV.

"smallest premium 40 inch LCD" 2009-10-26
By Daniel J. Berry (san fran)
I was in the market for the largest LCD that would fit in the space, and with its slim bezel, I scored a home run here. The picture is great as one would expect from Sony and 240htz, and the value was definitely there. I waited until I was actually afraid they were running out, and I recommend no one else cut it close. I have not seen another slim bezel set 40 inches anywhere close the value proposition here. I dont expect it to go lower before they are all gone, replaced by another wider framed Bravia perhaps.

I LOOK AT THE ADS IN AMAZONS SECTION FOR SONY TVs ALL THE TIME. THERE IS NEVER REALLY ANY MENTION OF WHAT THE CONTRAST RATIO IS. THE HZ HELPS BUT THE CONTRAST RATIO IS VERY IMPORTANT. IF U LOOK AT SAMSUNGS ADS IN AMAZONS SECTION , U WILL ALWAYS SEE HOW HOW MUCH THE CONTRAST RATIO IS . IT HELPS DEFINE COLORS AND SHARPNESS. SONY THINKS IT IS THE KING OF TVs AND PRODUCT? ITS NOT. YOUR PS3 CAN JUNK OUT BY DOING NOTHING AT ALL, NOT TO MENTION THE LAW SUIT THEY R IN CUZ OF THIER LATEST UPDATE VERSION. ANYWAY, THERE IS A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE CONTRAST RATIOS BETWEEN SONY AND SAMSUNGS TVs. THEY LIKE MAKING DAZZLINGLY CHEAP OVER PRICED ITEMS. EVEN THE WALWART VERSIONS OF THESE TVs ARE CHEAP IN CONTRAST RATIO.NOT SAMSUNGS THOUGH.

"High style and high performance" 2009-10-09
By Chambolle (Bainbridge Island, WA USA)
I will admit up front that I am a complete HDTV newbie. I hung on to a 20 year old, 22 inch CRT color "monitor television" for far too long, in part because I do not watch much television programming (a bit of baseball, PBS, occaisional Law & Order reruns, that sort of thing) and in part because the whole HDTV techno nerd thing was too intimidating. After much online research and a few surreptitious visits to Big Box electronics stores, I finally settled on the 40XBR9 and bought it from an Amazon seller -- and could not be more pleased with my selection. The picture quality is simply riveting. The menus are reasonably user friendly and I have not found it all that difficult to calibrate for optimum results in a softly lighted room. With minor tweaking, the factory defaults work well for most cable television programming. I used the CNET suggested calibration for movies on the 52XBR9, and it works very well on this 40 inch unit.

This is a beautiful television. The bezel is as slim as they come and is an unadorned, moderately glossy black. While it is not a small television, it is not too overbearing for a medium sized bedroom or office. Considering its slender bezel, and the fact that there are no visible speakers, the sound is more than adequate for watching most TV programming. I purchased a ZVOX 525 sound base and an OPPO blu ray player to go with it. I have yet to watch a blu ray disc, but upscaled DVDs like Ratatouille and Wall-E are incredibly crisp, vivid and detailed, with wonderfully natural color, deep, pure blacks and brilliant whites and grey tones. With sound from the ZVOX, this is a wonderful way to enjoy movies in a moderate sized room without an enormous investment of time and money and without a lot of wiring and equipment monopolizing the space.

The one down side is that the XBR9 is not very forgiving of poor quality source material. My local cable provider still offers a limited selection of true HD content. SD television does not fare well on this set, although with some tweaks you can get acceptable picture quality -- ratchet down the sharpness so the poor resolution is not obvious, use a 4:3 aspect ratio rather than 'stretch' the image to fill the screen, so the perspective is not distorted, turn down the brightness and restrict the color range to avoid the exaggerated and artificial hues that seem to be part and parcel of SD TV, and you get a reasonable picture on par with a decent CRT. But once you've seen good quality 16:9 HDTV content, you will be somewhat disappointed with SD sources.

This competes head to head with the high end LCD and "LED" TVs from Samsung. I think it beats them for at least two reasons. First, the Samsung models have a very glossy, "wet look" screen, which is really a distraction. Under some conditions, it gives the picture more "pop," but except in a darkened room, the glare problem is insurmountable. Second, the comparable Samsung televisions have wider and more obtrusive bezels with a brilliant piano black finish, which is made even more garish by Samsung's somewhat ludicrous red "Touch of Color" gimmickry. The Samsung design is like over the top prom wear. The 40XBR9 is the electronics version of the perfect, simple and refined little black dress.

Prices seem to fluctuate wildly -- the prices quoted on the date of this review are about 15% higher than they were when I made my purchase ten days ago. You may want to keep an eye on the market and catch the next wave of "sales." But you won't buy this TV because it is an inexpensive "bargain" -- you may buy it because dollar for dollar, it will give you the most pleasure during the years it will be in service.

"Doesn't Get Much Better Than This" 2009-10-14
By Jo Anne C. Knight (North Little Rock, AR)
I got in our first widescreen TV last week. (My old TV had one connection in the back and was about 15 years old.) Although I had a few worries about ordering such a large and expensive item from Amazon, those worries proved groundless.

Before ordering, I had done all sorts of research in Consumer Reports and at on-line reviews before arriving at this Samsung model for the way to go in HDTV sets, and I was able to order the exact model at a great price at Amazon.

I also had been worried about the delivery of such an item after reading mixed reviews. The delivery was superb. We needed to actually check the TV for damage on the spot, hook it up, and make sure it played. The young woman who delivered it was very professional and helpful.

At 68 years of age, I am the "tech person" in our home, but I found the actual plug and play feature a cinch. Adding my DVD player to the TV and U-Verse box was more challenging, but with some help from U-Verse and trial and error on my own, I was able to get my TV running well. Even though we am not paying for the HDTV service, we find the picture crisp and clear, and the closed captioning is a plus for us senior citizens. The swivel feature of the stand makes TV viewing effortless for the open plan of our living and dining areas. My next project is to learn how to program the remote so that I don't have to keep up with three of them.

There is nothing not to love about this TV. I'll have to let you know if I last longer than it does!

 "Outstanding Picture Quality" 2009-09-07
By Lionel (Delaware)
We needed to replace an old Sony 27" standard definition set and after doing my homework I decided to buy the Samsung LN46B550. When hooked up to an HD cable box, this set delivers an extremely high quality, noise-free, sharp, detailed picture. But its best picture feature is the amazing color quality - the best I've ever seen. Colors and flesh tones are very accurate with good detail in shadow scenes when properly adjusted to realistic saturation levels. I found the picture quality very easy to tune to near-perfection using the numerous built-in picture adjustments. In fact a videophile friend later brought over his video calibration DVD and was amazed to find the set delivering extremely accurate colors and contrast levels with no further adjustment necessary. My wife, who never paid much attention to picture quality, has suddenly become a videophile - she loves watching movies on this set. Next step is to buy a Blu-Ray player to fully exploit the set's capabilities.

I can't comment much on the audio quality because I am hard of hearing. The speakers are certainly more than adequate for my needs, and for watching movies we have the set connected to a home theatre system. I also appreciate the low gloss, matte screen on the B550. In daytime our viewing room can be rather bright but with this set there are no annoying reflections.

 "The Perfect Value HDTV" 2009-09-03
By D. Sourile (Chicago, IL USA)
Price: I couldn't find a better value on the market, not after Amazon through in a free Sharp Aquos HP BD22U Blu Ray Player, not to mention the free shipping and zero sales tax! This is the Consumer Reports best value in its class, and that in itself should tell you that you're getting a great product for a great price. Try and find another 46" LCD that gets you 4 HDMI ports, 70,000:1 contrast ratio, 6ms response time, and good reliable brand name attached to it. You simply can't beat this product for the cost.

Overall Look: Simply beautiful. The piano black trim all the way around is accented nicely (but very subtle, mind you) by the "Touch of Color" feature that is advertised. It is not nearly as bright as it looks in the picture Amazon shows, however in the right lighting you will appreciate it. From 8-10 feet away, all you see on the sleek TV is the Samsung logo dead center on the bottom of the frame, but if you look closely on the bottom right you will notice some small words. Take a closer look, and you'll see that they are actually the power button, alongside the volume and channel buttons. However, they are more analogous with touchscreen technology than "buttons." If you had your eyes closed and slid your fingers over that section of the frame of the TV, you would not know there was anything there. Yet they are very sensitive, and adds a lot to the overall look of the TV by being so discrete and unobtrusive. The stand is sturdy and a sleek black color, very simple to put together (4 screws).

Screen: Just perfect. Now I'm not a videophile, but this LCD looks pristine to me. This is my first encounter with an LCD, so I am just blown away. I've drooled over many of them in the stores, but this is the first I've ever owned. I'm coming from a 32" old school TV that weighed like 150lbs. This light, thin, beautiful TV is exactly what I've always wanted, and I couldn't recommend it any more than I am now. There are TONS of picture tweaking options in the Menu, but the TV comes out of the box perfect. I understand that when you buy them from stores like BestBuy, you have to do a lot of tweaking. Since this is straight from the warehouse, the thing looks great straight from the box. It has movie mode, standard mode, and some sort of brighter mode, all of which can be customized. You can adjust the warmth of the colors, the sharpness, the hue, the saturation of the greens/reds, the blackness of the blacks and MUCH, much more. It's a bit overwhelming for someone like myself who isn't a tech freak. Full 1080p with my Sharp Blu-Ray player was just flat out mind-melting. Gorgeous TV. Oh, and the 60HZ has not yet bothered me. I haven't seen a 120HZ side-by-side with the 60HZ yet, but I highly doubt that it is worth the $500 upgrade.

Other: Simple remote control, comes with a little cloth to wipe down your new toy when it gets dusty. Pretty thick instruction manual that I haven't made my way through yet. The box it comes in is HUGE, but it's cool because the top just lifts off, making the TV very easy to remove and set wherever you want it. I can't remember if this is shown on the Amazon synopsis of the product, but the inputs on the side of the TV are on the right side if you're looking at the screen straight on. All my stuff is on the left, so my short cords can't quite reach those. Just a little note to help people plan ahead. No banding that I've seen, no ghost images, no dead pixels, etc. Perfect.

Shipping Service (CEVA Experience): I'd read so many horrible things about this shipping company that I braced myself for the worst. They called me a day after the TV shipped (which was a Friday), and said "your tv will be delivered Wednesday [whatever date] between 3pm and 7pm." They didn't ask, they informed me. I didn't like that much. However, they delivered it on time (around 6:40pm that day), and I received the "White Glove" package that Amazon sets you up with, meaning that two guys came in, took my TV downstairs, opened the box, put the stand and TV together, mounted it where I wanted it, had me plug it in, and made sure it worked before they left. They didn't take my trash (which is part of the "white glove" package), but I wanted it anyways, so it wasn't a big deal. Nice guys, didn't wait around for a tip (I wasn't planning on giving one), and had me simply fill out a paper indicating that they did their job. Overall a good experience!

Quickness: I ordered the TV on a Wednesday, and received it the next Wednesday.

The Bad: The only bad thing I've had happen so far was that when I initially plugged in the TV to my satellite box, the colors were all messed up and the picture was grainy. The blues were green, the pinks were orange, the people's faces were red, etc. However I found out that this was simply because my component cables were bad. Once I plugged in my 3 cent (plus shipping) HDMI cord, all my problems were gone, and the picture was perfect as described above.

Don't hesitate to purchase this TV. You won't regret it. I am now a Samsung fan.

 "Awesome !!!!!" 2009-08-25
By Chetan Nadgonde
I ordered this a few weeks back to replace my 32" flat screen Sony. I must say that I am awe stuck. Its a wonderful product for the price that you pay. The picture quality is amazing for HD streams. I was in a dilemma to buy LN46B750 but I don't regret a bit buying this one as one can never tell the difference between the picture quality as there is none !!!! Amazon delivered the TV in a week and set up is not difficult at all. I would say go for it......

"Store Card vs Amazon Credit Card" 2009-10-07
By Robert M. (The OC)
I thought I bought this TV (which is fantastic and I love it) with 12 months no payments, no interest.
It turns out that the so-called Store Card is not the Amazon credit card--and there was no such deal
using the Credit card. I ended up with $2,899.99 on my Amazon Credit Card--all due the following month.
I called Chase--the manager was arrogant as I tried to explain the problem. She giggled and said that
she'd never heard of this offer. I called Amazon--many pages of "clickable" choices.
I finally found the "Help" link. This guy was nice but explained the difference between the Amazon Credit
Card and the Amazon Store Card and suggested I ship the TV back and redo the order. Nice in theory but
I'd already unpacked and installed the "thing" so it doesn't pan out in reality. I kept the
TV (it really is nice) and did not pack it up and ship it back, too much hassle.

Next I got an email from Amazon explaining--in so many words--how I f'd up. Nice. I wrote them back and
explained that I'd go ahead, pay off the TV then cancel mu Amazon "Confusion" Card and revert back to my Citi
card that gives me air miles. I felt better... until I received and answer back explaining that my response to THAT
email didn't go "anywhere" because it's unanswerable please go to (link such and such). I did, but once again I found
a busy page where it was difficult to come across the link to contact Amazon. Maybe if I still worked--I'm retired--I'd
have enough time (screwing off at work) to hack around and find these links and sort out all these cards, and offers,
etc. But as I explained in the email--that essentially went nowhere--that once I receive the Chase statement that I paid
the TV off--I will take great pride and joy in canceling that Amazon/Chase Credit Card and lick my wounds--they can
kiss my A-- if I ever use it again.

Signed: "Enjoying my TV," and the fact that I
am rich enough to pay off the debt and not have
to deal with jerks like the manager I dealt
with at Chase. She really reminded me of a
town hall meeting where the idiot from Congress
takes a question then calls someone on her Cell.
Duh?

 "Excellent" 2009-10-04
By Carlos E. Naranjo Giraldo (Colombia)
Excellent TV, very good image, the lights in the corners worried me, but the truth is that no matter, the picture is very good, nice design, slim, the only thing is the sound, but this is improved with a very good home theater , Samsung has created the best image at the time, One-Call, is serious, thorough, when I ask them, always responded. I am very happy with this TV and still buy in one-call always

"This TV set: BAD. Samsung customer service: Surprisingly good." 2009-09-30
By K. Weiss (Norwalk, CT, USA)
I bought this TV in May'09, and I was impressed with the form factor, how thin it was, etc. But there were all kinds of issues with the image, and if you read the other reviews right here on Amazon you'll see that there's a common issue with the lighthing coming from the corners. I'm not that picky... but this is bad, it's there all the time, really annoying. The 240 hz feature is another real pain, makes it almost impossible to watch. The camera pannings will make you dizzy. But at least this one bug can be disabled from the settings menu.

So I called Samsung, customer service was pretty good - they sent a guy within a week. He came in, look at the unit, ran some tests, and recognized the ligthing issue, said he had seen it in a lot of these. So within 2 weeks they sent a replacement screen. Same guy came with a brand new screen, we put it up... and... there it was again. Same issue.

After 5 months and a lot of phone calls Samsung is going to send me a full refund, and they'll pick up the unit. I'll buy a Panasonic Plasma this time. My recommendation based on what I've seen is obvious... do NOT buy this TV.

"Good picture, but bad Motion" 2009-09-26
By A. Naim
Well I purchased the Samsung 55 inch 8000 series LED LCD. After months of research and comparing it to Sony, this LCD has one of the best image quality in the market. Watching Blu ray on this LCD is just awesome. In terms of picture quality it beats the Sony Z series and all the Sony series, however the Sony XBR is almost the same as this.

The sound is really not that bad if you look at how slim this LCD is, so you can connect it to a sound bar or Bose cinemate. Another thing is that this does not have digital audio out, and only has a 3.5m stereo audio out. You need to buy a cable tree to RCA to connect to a home theatre or sound bar.

It comes with a lot of other drawbacks as well and sometimes I wonder if I should have gone with a Sony. The 240hz is just a gimmick. I am very sure the 120hz does the job so no need to consider this. As for the 2ms pixel response time on the 8000 is also one thing that a human eye cannot tell the difference. The 7000 series 4ms response time is the same. These are tactics to sell the units.

I am very sensitive to Motion blur, and the reason I bought the 8000 was so that I don't regret buying the 7000. But I was wrong. It clearly makes sense to buy the 7000 series as it will do the same job with the 120hz. But I have to say in Motion especially while watching analogue channels and sports channels, Sony XBR and Z series do the job perfectly. Nothing can beat a Sony in motion delivery. My next LCD will be a Sony because of Motion issues with Samsungs.

Also another thing to note is the reflection on this LCD. It is a lot especially for my apartment as I have floor to ceiling windows. But since I have curtains it is not that bad. But still Sony are better in this category as well.

And lastly i would say that the 8500 series is almost out now, so anyone buying the 8000 should wait and go for the local dimming LED technology in the 8500 series. But if you cant wait, then buy the 7000 series and not the 8000 series as difference is minimal. But if you can afford then go for the XBR Sony.

 "Beautiful TV" 2009-09-20
By P. Mok
Had the TV for about 3 weeks. Picture is fantastic in HD. DVD is excellent and Blu-Ray is amazing. Hooked it up with a Samsung Blu-Ray player, the pair works in tandem. Set up is a piece of cake.
Areas of improvement: May be it is too new, I cannot seem to find how to label the inputs. HDMI1, 2 or 3 can be confusing. Also, there are some touch control for volume, channel etc. but they are not lighted. They are impossible to see. May be that why I got two remote controllers.
